I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Dunno if there's already a thread, but I was wondering how you guys and girls came across this site and what made you stay and try the 5x5?
I was just googling for the use of rowing machines when I had started to go to a gym again and someone posted a comment that included "rowing" to one of Mehdi's articles. So I read the article, then all the linked articles and the linked articles again etc. because they were simply interesting. I was never planning on following some kind of routine, thought going to the gym, using the machines and imitating the curl monkeys would be the thing to do, until I learned better. So it was purely by luck, and now I'm really happy to have found it, because now I know what I do, why I do it, and, most importantly, how to do it.
So did you also just stumble upon this site, get a recommendation or actively search for it? looking forward to hear your stories...

I was googling Bill Starr and this site was one of the first ones that came up. Very good site, I like the way it's moderated and appreciate that.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

Same as joe. I googled "deadlift technique" and this site was one of the results. I read a few articles, and then some others on the squat, bench press etc. I liked the style, the environment and the method of training advocated here really appealed to me. I kept reading articles for about a month, then decided to join the forum and start the routine.

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

Postby Andy Mc on Sun Mar 16, 2008 7:59 pm

I have been training on and off for a few years now. I had never really seen any gains in that time. All the sites and books and the fellas 'down the gym' were all about hittin muscle groups with 3 exercises, "this, that, the other thing".
This all got very confusing and i didnt really know what i was doing. I was spending way too much time in the gym try to fit all of these exercises (overtraining), plus i didnt really know what i wanted from training. The guys i was going with were all about bicep curls, big chests and tight t-shirts (each to their own).
Once i stumbled upon this 'GEM' of a site (cheers Mehdi) everything slipped into place. I love the idea of the old school methods, which seemed so simple but effective. The "if you want to get good at dips, do dips!" "if you want to get good at chins, do chins!" attitude pulled me in, because at the end of the day, whats the point in kidding yourself and trying to avoid hitting something ' head on'. I love that shit.
The quote from Henry Rollins, the way this site is a blend of strength training and personal development and all in all inspiring. I can use this not just in the gym but in life.
I love deadlifts. The thought of staring down at a bar loaded with weight gives me a buzz! Over the last couple of months i have gained half a stone of lean muscle (a little belly fat :() and just feel generally better in myself. Eating clean and boosted energy levels with mind and body connection that i think many people lose due to inactive lifestyles.
All in all this is a quality site - a big thank you to Mehdi and all of the guys that posted their logs and continue to do so. Strength is good...
Peace - ANDY

how did you find stronglifts.com & why did you stay?

Postby mutt on Sun Mar 16, 2008 8:43 pm

digg.com here, i forget which article now. i had been running and doing random weights for some time, but was on a major plateau.
read the article.. to be honest, it was just exactly what i wanted to here.
big lifts, 3xweek, no isolation really.. made sense, although entirely new to me. like most (or many).. i had always done isolation.   i've been fiendishly reading about strength training ever since.
why do i stay? i like the "sport" of strength training as opposed to the "appearance" of bodybuilding.

I googled either strength training, or squat technique, I don't remember which. Found it, read through, thoroughly enjoyed it. Here I am, not a month later already noticeably stronger.

I think it was stumbleupon, a long time ago when stronglifts was a part-time thing for Mehdi. This was before I had decided to start lifting weights, but when I had just decided on a less specific idea of "getting in shape". I stayed because the site was free of the macho crap you find on so many other sites; it has simple advice which is easy to put into practice- no complicated spilt routines with swiss balls. I liked the way Mehdi responded to most of the comments and questions, and how the polite and encouraging tone of the site carries over to the commenters and posters.
It has also been fun to get involved with the forum community, and watch as the site grows from a hobby to a full-time job to (I hope) an internet powerhouse is down to earth training methods.
