I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

How do I stop Mindless eating?

Postby echoe09 on Mon May 11, 2009 6:46 pm

Half an hour ago i went upstairs and i saw a dinner roll. So i just automatically took out the extra chunky peanutbutter and ate it. Not too bad but then all of the sudden i realize i just had like 4 of them. I was focusing on other things so i guess you could say it was mindless eating i i know i do it sometimes. Its not good for me because i was just scoping the kitchen so i could prepare myself a grilled salmon salad but now im full..

So have any of you guys had same kind of thing? How do i control it more?

Sorry if this is not the most suitable place to post this.

Become anal about calories and eat something with protein every 2-3 hours. Meal preparation and scheduling allow you to control when you eat. Compulsive eating can be a sign that you aren't getting enough calories. Know how many calories you need in a day.

Thanks for the help. You are right about the calories, at least for today because i didn't eat anything for like 6 hours and i usually eat every 3-4 hours.
I am trying to do the groceries and get all the stuff i need to eat, but i just don't have the money as of now. All my money is going to my bills and the rest to some food for myself.

Eating often and drinking water helps here.

I know for myself especially if I'm around the house, if I don't make myself eat often and drink water I can end up just eating anything to kill time. Food should definitely not be a time killer.

I guess just feed myself on time lol. If i do get the munchies i usually have like a granola bar or maybe some oatmeal. I keep nuts and Mangoes in my room so thats always my first resort.

It was just weird because it felt involuntary.

A professor once told our class that many students working on their thesis papers get fat because they do a little research, have a nibble, and so it goes. The trick is to be doing something that requires you not to eat.

For example:

Watching TV: good time to snack.
Streching: bad time to snack.
Surfing the web: good time to snack.
Chasing you kid around the house, bad time to snack.
Throwing a few pints back: good time to snack.
Sleeping: bad time to snack.

Just get/keep busy!Or Sleep!

Just don't eat when you get those urges. It's pretty much that simple, especially if you're feeding yourself as you should. I tended to be a muncher before I started lifting weights and eating healthier, but I've pretty much stopped doing it altogether. I used to be the guy raiding the lunch room for the communal bag of chips or grazing on the munchies during an office function, but I've taught myself to stop. Once in a great while, I'll get a hankering for a bag of Fritos or something awful like that and I go for it, but 90% of the time, I just ignore the urge, as difficult as it can be. Don't kill yourself over-worrying about a snack here and there. It's when you do it consistently that it becomes a problem.

Get some flavored fiber tablets. When your feel you're about to mindless eat, munch a couple and drink a huge glass of water. The fiber and water will be hella filling. And of course have all of your calories.! :)

Hey man, here's what's worked for me so far, though I'm new to changing my life around for the better.

Keep a food log. Lots of ways to make this easier... set up a twitter account and twitter every piece that goes into your mouth, or a small pad and mini-pen. At the end of the day, drop it into a site like fitday.com. It sounds like a lot of work, but really it isn't. When you're recording what you eat, you become more aware, or mindful, of just what's going into your mouth. Plus looking a the number of useless calories you're eating in a day might surprise you. Seeing a number every day is really good motivation I find.

Focus on proteins (eg meats), fats (eg cooking fats) and veggies. As recommended, keep the carbs to specific times to keep your insulin levels purring along instead of swinging up and down and making you hungry. I noticed that once my body adapted to running on restricted carbs, I starting becoming more in tune with my hunger and able to sort our real hunger from cravings. Plus protein and fats make you feel full longer.

Restrict your access. If possible, don't keep anything you don't want to eat around the house. I keep pretty much just real foods around. I haven't added carbs post workout yet because I'm just starting, but if I do, I'll be keeping only the amount I need around so I can't snack.

Limit Alcohol. At least for me, nothing makes me break down and snack on junk than a few drinks.

Sleep. As mentioned, making sure you are well rested will help with any stresses you might be feeling which might incline you to satisfying it orally.

Hmmm.. anyways, that's it off the top of my head.

Good luck!!!
