I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

How long does it take you for a 5x5 workout?

Mehdi mentions in a couple places that 5x5 is a 30 min, 3x/week program. That can't be right, even with your own personal gym! I do the 3 basic exercises, squats, bench press, barbell row, and then do dips or pull ups, and it takes me an hour, MINIMUM. I do 4-5 warm-up sets for squats, and then the 5 work sets take nearly 20 minutes alone.

It takes me more than an hour, at home with no waiting for equipment. But I do a thorough warm-up before lifting. I estimate that today's workout lasted about 1:15. My workouts were quicker when the weight was lower.

IDK, some workouts are really fast, like sub 45 minutes even, others take longer...

I know that workout B should definitely take a shorter amount of time since you're only doing deadlifts once.

When I first started I could do the workout in 40-50 minutes as I timed my rest periods to 2 minutes or less depending on the lift (ie dips and pull/chin ups took less rest). Now that the weight has increased I take almost 5 minutes to rest in between sets. Also I take twice the amount of time to warm up to try and reduce the chance of injury. Now it takes 1.5 hours.

~45 minutes, this is with 3 sets of reverse crunches added to the original routine.

I was curious about the 30 minutes figure as well. It usually takes me around an hour.

It started out taking me half an hour but as I've moved up in weight I tend to need more rest between sets.....so now I need 45min to an hour. The speed of my workout also depends on how people left the power rack the night before and it weights are all over the place or where they should be.

Last year when I was heavily into 5x5, workouts were lasting 1:15 on average and I was going as fast as physically possible. After some time off, and weights down *a lot*, the workouts take around 45 minutes max.

Really depends on the weights your doing and your recovery time.

When I add in cardio, it's about an hour and a half on average. B days take less time, on the average. Some days are harder than others, though, and take more than the average, some days less than.

When I started I was only taking one minute between sets. So my workout time was around 45 mins. Now I take at least two minutes between every set and my workouts take longer than an hour.

It took me a half hour just to squat tonight. Of course, that was with a potty break between warmup sets and work sets.

Normally though workout 'A' is about 1:15 or so. Workout 'B' about an hour flat. It depends on the weights you're working with relative to your strength and recovery. Right now I'm working with (what for me are) maximal weights on squat. I'm resting two to three minutes between work sets. That shoots 10 - 12 minutes right there.

There is never an absolute answer to everything, except of course that you have to do your squats.

Good glad to hear that I'm in the ballpark with 1:00 to 1:15 for workouts. I've been doing rests of about 1 minute or so but as weight has gotten heavier I've needed to up that as well. I read a lot of Rippetoe's Starting Strength and took from him that you really need to put in serious time for warmups. I think it's especially true when you work out first thing in the morning.
