I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

The milk jug says it not from cows treated with RBST (growth hormone). Salmon was $21, but hit the half-off shelf, plus the club card discount knocked it down to 8 bucks. Nope, it's not wild. Farm raised, just like the other tasty animals I enjoy.

I think the Organic section in my local supermarket will soon be a victim of the recession. This indefinable "quality" you mention doesn't justify the price preimum.

I think some of this reflects regional differences in food prices. I know I could probably spend less, maybe as low as $60 a week (depending on what I'm willing to give up; I'd be eating mostly beans and vegetables), but much less than that would be extremely difficult here. I might be able to go to some cheaper stores if I had a car, but that would kind of negate the cost savings :) (I live in Boston and don't really need one).

Wow, it seems like people are spending a lot of money on groceries. If I was spending $70-100 a week on groceries for myself I probably wouldn't be buying anything else! I spend about $35-45 (USD) per week for myself depending on what is on sale and all that. Between my girlfriend and I it's usually around $80/week. Probably even cheaper for me now, being in Budapest. It's all about shopping smart!

I spend over £100 per week on groceries just for myself. But then I decided to get as much of my protein and healthy fats/oils directly from the food with minimal supplements, so there's a lot of salmon, mackerel, herring, steak etc.

Actually, I did my sums wrong. Forgot that today's bill included a tub of whey protein, which will last me over a month (I mostly get my protein from the food and only use supplements when I've not had the opportunity to prepare a high-protein meal). And some weeks I do go the cheap tinned tuna route, which halves the bill. But that still leaves the average at around £60, which is partly down to me being determined to get all the necessary protein and oils from the food, with no supplements, wherever possible and partly to buying mostly organic, free range etc. Yes, it's expensive, but I really enjoy the food I make and I just couldn't face a life of chewing through tinned tuna every week.

I'm living alone (sort of - renting out part of a friends house who's away at college, his parents are still there), and I spend maybe 50 bucks a week buying actualy groceries. Basic stuff. Eggs, peanut butter, some fruit, rice, beans, bread.

Now and then I'll pick something up when I'm out, buy a retardedly expensive shake at my gym (but they're sooooo goooood). But groceries? Around 50. Have no idea how I'd spend 100+ bucks a week.

my problem is always that the more expensive, longer lasting things always seem to run out at the same time. I can pretty much guarantee that my nuts and seeds mix, whey, olive oil, multivits and fish oil will all run out in the same week.

I'm sometimes glad I stopped buying whey just for that reason. But olive oil is the worst IMO - I've always dreaded the days I run out. And I use it a lot, too. I tried to save myself some $$ and buy the cheap(er) kind, and it absolutely sucked. So unfortunately I still dread those days.

I think I spend around $50-$60 per week for just me. I literally buy the bare minimum of meat, egg whites, vegetables, oatmeal, and fresh fruit. I do not buy any snacky type food because it really is not part of my diet and those things can add up.

It helps to make a grocery list and actually stick to it.

I am a student too and I live on my own so I have to make a budget to ensure that I can afford rent and my other bills.

I'm still a student and so my parents provide me with money. They have recently been complaining that I spent too much money on groceries (don't really spent money on anything else really, dont eat out either..only cook myself)

So I've been spending around 80€ (according to google - 120usd or 72 pound) a week..that excludes supplements simply because they last longer than a month..How about you guys?!

120usd a week seems expensive. I'm a student too atm (finishing up graduate studies) and i spend about 250 CAD a month (less if I shop at Chinatown).

Somewhere between 30-50. Huge cheap bags of brown rice are great, and I get mostly frozen veggies. I stay away from the super expensive meats. 3 bucks for gallon o milk, sometimes less.

I spend more than I did in college, but at the same time, I've given up drinking, cigs, soda, and fast food, so, I got some cash freed up. It's for a hobby and sustenance. 2 birds, 1 stone, right?

On that note, while I know we shouldn't be judgemental, I am glad I am eating not just bigger but cleaner. I go to other peoples houses, and it seems all anyone eats is those boxed preservative chocked crap nasties. No thanks, I don't care how appealing or healthy the marketing team makes those boxes, dinner don't come with a plastic see through lid.

You really don't need to spend much to eat healthy as people claim. I spend between £25-£30 a week (we do a big shop between 5 of us which costs £100-£120), and we all go to the gym so eat the same foods. I drink loads of milk, eat chicken most days, always have meat with my meals, eat a minimum of 3000 calories a day, have vegetables with most meals..and i eat 4-5 meals a day. When you're buying meats or bread, just look for the special offers and buy shit loads of it, then freeze it till you need it.

Also some of my family are from ireland (Cork), and my housemate is from Derry, and i happen to know the cost of living IS NOT expensive in Ireland (i go there very often). You can get a 4 pint of milk there for 70p (like 90 cent), and you can get big boxes of chicken breasts extremely cheap aswell. You clearly aren't looking hard enough. The only thing i've noticed is extremely high in Dublin is the cost of alcohol (ridiculously high in fact)
