I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

How Much Muscle is it possible to put on in a year???

Hey guys I was just wondering how much muscle it is possible to put on in a year. Most advice that I have read on other forums and magazines etc says it that in your first year a weight lifting you can expect to put on about 20lbs of muscle and only about 10lbs of muscle a year from then on. Is this accurate? And what have been your own muscle gains whilst weight lifting? Personaly I have but on about 40lbs of muscle in two years.

20-30 pounds is possible for most people their first year.

I am in my mid-teens, and in seven months, I went from 133lbs to 178lbs. Obviously not all of this was muscle, but at least 25-35lbs of this definitely was. I also did GOMAD on/off throughout this time. For someone in their first year, 3-4lbs a month is possible, even easier if the person is in their teens (because of the hormones and such). If you train hard and in a progressive fashion, and eat like a horse, and drink your milk, in your first year you are looking at 30-50lbs of muscle gains. It obviously depends upon the individual.

Some believe you can only gain 10lbs of muscle a year maximum, but from personal experience I know that is utter bullshit.

After the initial beginner gains, 10 pounds a year makes more sense, and that number will only decrease the bigger you become.

This is totally dependent on your genetics. Who ever saying else is either talking off his/her ass or trying to sell something.

Less than a year ago I weighed 69kg, now I weigh about 20kg (45lbs) more after starting lifting in April. Obviously not all muscle but definitely a goodly proportion. I'm not in my teens either. I don't see why most other average people couldn't get the same results.

True, true. I guess I can't really talk. Like a typical early 20s person sometimes I feel so old

Varies so much on age and circumstance that any "limit" anyone tells you is most likely "broscience" or bullshit.

I see some amazing gains (which I'm sure are real) from some teenagers and 20 year olds, might be some hormones working for them.

In the period before I was injured I had gained 20lbs in a year in my late 20's, by training hard and eating big, I was not untrained before that. I don't think I could do that year after year.

Guys who have previously been big/strong but lost alot of size for some reason or another (injury/layoff) tend to be able to really pack size back on quick.

Btw I think your own experience tells you how much stock to place in what you read in magazines and on... ahem... internet forums...

I think i put like 15-20 lbs of weight since i started going to the gym - the period is 6-7 months . Given that my waist is only 1-2 cm bigger than it was in the begining i see most of it is muscle . Although spread over my tall body its not so visible .

I gained close to 20 lbs in 4 months (age 21) over the summer.

My last summer was a perfect setup for gaining weight though, I lived alone with my gym a 2 minute walk from my house, my job of 6 hours/day a 5 minute walk from my house, and no other responsibilities to deal with.

yea, I think alot is genetics, also some of us 30 year old somethings seem to not give it 100% like we did as teenagers. I'm 33, I just started a couple of weeks ago, I fully expect to gain as fast as when i was younger. I'm not allowing myself the idea of failing at that.

plus i eat WAY better than when i was in highschool... that's gotta help :)

It's actually easier to put on muscle when you get older, because your metabolism is lower. I've been gaining muscle on 3 meals a day; 30 pounds in the last 6 months. I never gained that fast in my teens or 20's.

My uncle is in his late 50's and he's only been training for a year and he's already as big as me. He's been dieting and doing cardio the whole time.

I was reading an article by Rip today about one of his newest athletes, who gained 55 pounds of bw of which about 32 pounds of LBM in 12 weeks. Might be genetically gifted, but it does show you what hard work and a GOMAD can give you.
