I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

A new website from Rip and co. it seems.
Some nice (and funny - i find it funny i don't know if thats the intent though) little interviews, a nice website because its also about iconic lifters that i myself am not familiar with so im learning about the powerlifting culture of the 70s before Bodybuilding became all the rage. Hopefully you will all find interesting or at least humorous.

It's actually from one of the guys that trains at Rip's gym (WFAC), though it obviously has the support of Rip himself. I believe the site's author is J. Lascek (Giving credit where it's due). The guy has done a good job on the site. I've been checking it every Monday and Thursday, as that is when he updates it.

It is certainly funny, in the way that Rip himself is funny (sort of dry humor, delivered in a Texan drawl).

(cheers for fixing the link btw)

I particularly like this part taken from the about page:

It’s currently in vogue to have a spindly, thin appearance which is typically accompanied by a low body fat percentage. Regardless of why this has come to be, those who have such an appearance are not very useful. Imagine asking someone of this “stature” to help you move your car out of the road, haul some lumber, or even fend off a potential zombie attack. It simply wouldn’t be feasible.

70's Big

Postby MikeD » Mon Nov 09, 2009 5:25 am

http://www.70sbig.com

Amusing site by strengthmill.net (where rippetoe's Q&A was located) contributor Justin Lascek, who is at the Wichita Falls gym with 'ol Rip. The site's main gimmick - which I guess is somewhat offensive to call it that - is designed around the idea of all things leading to getting "70's Big", which is the kind of big you get when your focus is getting very, very freaking strong and eating a shit ton of food.

Now go and peruse, damn it.

Oh, and please watch this video of Ricky Bruch, discus thrower/bodybuilder/fucking lunatic, courtesy of 70'sbig.

Go to 3:00 for the really good part, and the best post-workout celebration ever.

Rip grabbed me in a bar in 1996 and expressed displeasure at my mug of Bud Light. He said "it’s not beer if you can see right through it." He bought me a more suitable replacement.

Didn't realize there was already a topic, sorry.

The Ricky Bruch vid is still deserving of its own topic :D

The Ricky Bruch video just seemed creepy like some weird late 70s / early 80s horror film.

One of the latest videos on the website, of Werner Günthör (a shot putter) is really awesome, interesting training and nice to see him put it into practice.

Usually don't care about curls, but that cheat curl at 2:05 is crazy.

Edit: And he had no index finger? lol at 2:57.

I think the cheat curls at 2.59 are more crazy :P

I loved the weighted broomstick twists too, killers for the obliques and probably quite functional for the "twisting" during the discus throw.

These sort of training videos inspire me more than modern stuff, i think thats what i like about 70s big, men should be big and powerful, and not doing a million different ab exercises so they can try and fit into their skinny jeans.

Great videos. Awesome cinematography, cool music. I noticed that he is missing the index finder on one hand.

I have 70sbig on my reader. Sometimes they overdo the "eat massive amounts of shit" message, but I do appreciate the core ideal of bigness> abz and gunz.
