I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I want to improve my squats!

Postby Energoto on Fri Nov 06, 2009 1:25 pm

Hello everyone! I've been using stronglifts 5x5 for some time now, my squat technique got better then when I started, but its still far from perfect, so I need few tips on how to improve it.

Here is a video of me doing squats:

things I noticed:
1) my knees are travelling forward at the bottom
2) still cant do the hip-drive imo
3) trying to keep the weight on my heels, my feets are coming somehow off the floor and its annoying
4) I can definitely go lower, but didnt in this video

Any opinions and tips are welcome!
Thanks in advance

Here are some quick thoughts.

Definitely go lower if you can.

Your knees aren't travelling forward when you're trying to come up. This is good, it is a no-no when the knees travel forward when trying to come up.

What your knees are doing is moving forward a bit closer to the end of the descent because you're they're still settling into position. The reason why they are coming forward so late is that when you start the descent, you throw your hips back and roll onto your heels. This is also why your feet come off the floor. You are wobbling backwards a little bit so your knees don't fully go into proper position until you're lower into the hole.

You need to focus on pushing with your heels when you are coming back up, but that doesn't mean that on the way down all the weight should be on the back of the foot. Focus on keeping your foot solid and planted with the weight evenly distributed on the way down, then curl your toes and push through your heels on the way back up. Keeping your foot planted is going to a) be less dangerous in terms of accidentally falling backwards and b) will allow your knee to come into the proper position earlier in the descent.

Not a bad squat at all.
I noticed the last couple reps were deep enough, but you're kind of feeling for the bottom position. Try to get a feel for this, so you can make it into a fluent movement, bouncing off your hamstrings in the bottom. This will make incorporating hipdrive into your squat much easier.

Also, deadstrength, great analysis and advice.

Push your knees out earlier and harder so you can hit depth. Open the groin.

This has nothing to do with form (as the points have pretty much been hit), but man do you take a hike with that thing. If you were in a power rack you probably would've touched the other end of the cage. Unrack, one step back, and set up. Practice this when the weight is light so the movements are ingrained when things get heavy. You aren't going to want to walk to grandma's house and back with 150kg.
The bands won’t make you squat big; check between your legs before you change anything. It takes more than a band to make you squat. -Chuck Vogelpohl
