I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

increased popularity of strength training in your gym??

Postby connorjs » Wed Mar 12, 2008 11:18 am

my friend who reads mens health (i know i know) pretty much changes his routine each time a new edition comes out. he was telling me the other day about a deadlift he was doing which starts off as a deadlift, then turns into a shrug at the top of the movement before (wait for it....) he does a calf raise!!!!
i bet the guys at the magazine who make all of this stuff up piss themselves trying to think up of all the crazy shit every month!!!

increased popularity of strength training in your gym??

Mehdi,
Granted the movement i mentioned may be a legitimate exercise, however, surely the rep range that they recommend would mean that grip would fail before any other muscle group? (especially for begninners or intermediates).
i just believe that many publications promote advanced movements which many not be completely beneficial for its readership. this is one of the reasons which made me join your website.
an example of this can be seen on another forum where i expressed an interest in zercher deadlifts, which, by the looks of it is quite a complicated movement to do safely.
you quite rightly pointed out that only people who can already deadlift 1.7 - 2xbw should attempt them due to the strains on the body the zercher places on the body. this is entirely responsible and may cause people to avoid injury from attempting movements they are not yet ready for.
i feel that certain publications are not as responsible.

Thanks Connor. I want to be sure you understood my previous comment: some magazines advocate "new exercises", like (I don't know how it was written): you do a deadlift, then shrug, then a calf raise. New exercise of the month. that is just a clean pull, old exercise done by weight lifters ;)
Zercher deadlifts are great from a chaos training perspective: while you should try to keep your lower back straight, in daily activities it's often not possible to keep your lower back straight. Getting out of your bed for example. For strongman: stone lifting, try to do that with a straight lower back. Or picking something very low, like your opponent in mma. That's where zerchers help. But as I wrote in previous thread: if you don't have some base back strength, you really shouldn't do them. Learn to step, then to walk.
