I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Influenza

Postby RealUltimatePower on Sat Nov 07, 2009 5:41 pm

Hey everyone,

I am doing Stronglifts Intermediate on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. I am on week 4. I came down with Influenza on Thursday. I will probably be able to lift again on Wednesday. Where should I pick back up?

Thanks

Hello and welcome :D

I did encounter this, 2 times already (luckily not influenza each time ;) ).

First time I had the flu, I decided to restart the complete cycle since I was only in week 2.
2 weeks ago I had to stop on W4/D2, D3 only came a week after (holidays).
Last Saturday I did the missing W4/D3 session almost completing as laid out in the spreadsheet, as of this week I am in W5 which is deload week anyhow (same weights as W4 but reduced volume).

In your case, since you have been ill, I would suggest to tack in another week to get back into the groove. 80% of W4 or so. Then repeat week 4.
Afterwards you will get your deload week.

I went to the gym tonight to repeat D1/W4 (the only day which I was able to complete last week). I did this because I figured that if I can't hit it tonight (I was feeling really pumped) that I probably won't be able to hit the following week. On squats I loaded the bar to 210, my ROM was utter shit and I was still struggling a lot more than I had been last week. On set 2 I was only able to do 3 reps. I lowered the weight to 200, but I was still having issues so I gave up. Both of the flat bench presses were full so I said fuck it and left. I started feeling nauseous and I guess I lost a lot more strength than I thought (especially in my core).

I am probably going to restart the entire program next. Though I am really pissed because 3 1/3 weeks of hard work (I also had to work very hard to make time for the gym) is all going down the drain. Do you have any suggestions for what I should do the rest of this week, to prepare me for restarting?

It doesn't work like that.
Your body needs some time to recover from the flu, give it the time.
Take it easy this week as suggested, restart W4 next week.

I understand the frustration about possible hard work being lost (and it is hard work, especially the first weeks of the volume phase) but take into account all efforts are not to be considered as such.
There will always be some strength build up.

Weight lifting is a marathon, not a sprint.
Recover first, then restart.

I''ve just done my first session after having the 'flu (2 weeks off training) and boy did I struggle!I was squatting 100kg before the illness, now I struggled with 80kg! Same for the OHP, was failing at 60kg, now struggled with 50kg. I'm gonna listen to my body and not push it until I'm ready to.

Had to take a week off because I had a fifth disease...man can you believe that? I didnt have the disease as a kid so I got it when I am 20 years old, and it struck me so bad I had to wait a week to lift weight again.
