I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

The poor workout turned out much worse than I feared, when I got home that night I was in quite a bit of discomfort and have been until today. I've bought myself a new belt anyway and this time I'm actually going to wear it, no more raw deadlifts.

Just a pulled muscle somewhere around the erector spinae (ish), but it stopped me laying flat or standing up from sitting without a fair bit of pain. Spent the last few days sleeping in the Lazee-boy, it upset the dog I think he thought the wife had kicked me out of the bedroom.

Sorry to hear that, rest well Jim. :D

The squat, press, deadlift, and bench press have been used for decades by the strongest athletes on the planet. There is good reason for that. Any program that doesn’t use them is inferior to one that does.

Kind words, thanks!
I never let these injuries get me down though, they just make me appreciate how good it is to be fit and strong most of the time. I think subjecting yourself to pain and discomfort as part of your weekly training toughens you up anyway. When you've squatted 'till you puked most other things seem a bit easier.
The new belt is awesome by the way, a Titan lever belt from Pullum sports, worth every penny.

You've got a great perspective on that Jim.

I used a belt for the first time yesterday. I really must invest in one.

You've never used a belt before?
You should choose carefully when you get one then, a good belt can really make your squats a lot better. there's a bit of a learning curve though, pushing against the belt with the abs takes a bit of getting used to for some (I'll bet you're a natural though  )

Anyway I actually got in the gym today so:

Press Behind Neck
135/3/3/3/3
200/3/3/3/3
Hang Clean & Press
135/3/3/3/3
220/3/3/3/3
Face Pulls
50lb/10/10/10
90lb/10/10/10

I was a bit nervous as the back is still a little sore but what the hell. It all went pretty easy but I wasn't attempting anything special, just to see if I could bend down far enough to do up the velcro on my Do-Wins!

No. Yesterday was the first time.

I'm a natural at a lot of things Jim.

Pushing against it with my abs didn't take much getting used to once I got the belt in the right place and got it tight enough. Squatting with it helped. I don't know if I could have pushed 185 without it.

Glad the back didn't bother you too much today.

Wed 12/08/09
Barbell Row (chest supported)
135/20/10/10
200/6/6/6
242/5/5/5
Chins
5/5/5/5/5
Dumbell Pullover
70lb/15/15
120/10/10

I was more concerned about my back than anything else so chest supported rows seemed the best thing to try, even though I'm not too keen on them. Anyway I got through it without bursting anything and hopefully I'll be back to normal soon and can get back on the horse so to speak.

Nice volume of Chin-Ups there Jim Slade. Would you say Chins have helped you somewhat through your years of training?

I'd say chins were a sort of personal challenge type thing, and the reason I've got a big back. I normally aim for either 50 reps or 100 reps in total done in as few sets as possible, depending on what sort of training I'm doing that period. I think chins are a sort of test of your mettle, in a way like squats it's something serious people do. The weird thing is I've been training now about twenty years and chins never get any easier.

Good advice on the chins. Are you doing pull ups or chin ups? I like the volume approach like that and I've just started doing that with dips.
