I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hahaha...the stuff that happens! I'm laughing because I have a one year old and I swear that I'm in the ER on a monthly (at least) basis now for some fall or another. I also had Bells Palsy several years ago. Have the symptoms gone away yet? Mine went away after a good month or so. I literally just woke up one morning and was fine. It's a strange condition to say the least.

Your trainer might have been onto something regarding the activation exercises though. I'm not sure why I would necessarily cut out squats for a few weeks but I would certainly work them into my program (which you've done).

Sorry to hear all of that Kathy. I remember taking my son to the hospital when he was having trouble breathing. At the time I didn't know he had asthma. I'm glad my mom was there with me. It was heart wrenching when they started an IV.

Good job on the workout though. It's tough to get through when your mind is 100 miles away.

They tried 3 times to get a vein to draw some blood (to rule out Lyme disease as a cause) so needless to say, he was a screaming, pathetic mess.

Did have appointment w/the trainer although really wanted a margarita.

Wow, when it rains....! I hope you and your babies are doing better today, Kathy. Way to push thru and get some (alot) of your workout in. Did you ever get the margarita? I have one child that is a screamer and one who, thus far, does not (crossing myself here) seem to get flustered by injections. We haven't done the vaccines for Kindergarten yet tho'...probably just jinxed it...shoot.

Kathy wrote:Discussion re:squat form - her assessment is that my hammies are still tight and most importantly, my glutes are not activating. It makes sense to me...I think my hips compensate for my lack of glutes by "pulling" me out of the hole instead of my glutes pushing. It would explain why they are so achy.
She wanted me to give up the barbell for a few weeks to focus on glute activating movements but I balked. We compromised. I lower the weight in squats and deads and do 3x5 so I have enough time to do her assistance movements 3x a week.

very interesting...sounds like you agree with her then...I've wondered the same thing for myself...I never feel sore in my glutes/hamstrings from squatting...I know, you won't necessarily feel it, but I sure do after Deads. Do you feel like your hammies are tight? I mean do you do stretches? I'm very curious to see how this progresses Kathy...good luck.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! All kids are fine and running around like lunatics. Staples come out on Monday so we can go back to the pool. Lyme disease test came back "technically negative" but suspicious. Hard to explain...so don't know whether the one guy has it or not. He gets to take antibiotics for 30 days

@Liz - DID get the margarita tonight. Broke down...tasted great. Then jogged 1.5 miles w/double stroller (mostly downhill, though) to the "Concert in the Park" in town. Hopefully, that took care of the margarita calories (probably not)

@PG - Thanks for the article. How do you find all this stuff? Will have to take these tests tomorrow and see how poorly I do!

Also, if any of the ladies are looking for some light summer reading, I highly recommend Jen Lancaster's books "Such a Pretty Fat" and "Pretty in Plaid". Hilarious stuff :D

guru wrote:Hey Kathy,

Nice Bench numbers. You'd have got it 5x5, but no worries - you'll get it next time.

It's good that you can call 125 - 5x5 as light box squats.

Hi Guru,
Thanks. I am worried I won't get the 5x5 bench without a handoff, I think it made that much of a difference. Will find out tomorrow!

Nice workout there, Kathy! Now finally I get to see someone from the east coast!

I tell ya, as soon as your glute is activated, you'll feel the difference right away.

Heehee, me too. 77.5 is big!

I have never, EVER managed to succeed with "I'll just do the chinups at home"... I think this excuse comes from a nasty little demon somewhere in my brain who wants me to fail... If I catch myself thinking it, I tell myself sharply to finish the whole workout!

Again nice OP..

I am trying to get into the "glute activation" world but having a hard time. I literally have the laziest ass on the planet!!!

On a positive note, I did pass those "tests" from PG's article, although the first one was tough...definitely felt the glutes and hammies.
