I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Knee Pain from Squats?

Postby langknow on Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:50 pm

Hi peoples,

I've just started 5x5 program.

After my work out yesterday, everything was fine.

Then me and my buddy went to watch Inglorius Basterds and after the movie, my left knee, felt really really weird, like it was dislocated or something. At first it was a bit difficult to bend down.

Today, it still feels weird. It doesn't hurt, but when I bend down and do like a squat it feels a bit tight still.

What happened ? and Is this something I should be concerned about ?

Is this because of the squats I've been doing ?

I've noticed when I press on the outside portion of my left knee it feels like someone has hit me and it feels a bit bruised, but not bruised.

My mobility is still great, I ran for the bus this morning no problems.

It just feels like something isn't right, like it's like the joint is not suppose to be there or something.

I'm confused and scared, and dont' know if I should continue 5x5 stronglifts.

How were you sitting during the movie?

I was sitting regularly, my leg was bent, and the left foot was flat on the floor....I was wearing transformer shoes, so maybe that's why?

What are these transformer shoes you speak of? They sound interesting.. :D

Have you thought about the possibility of it being squat form? Can you post a vid?

It doesn't sound like that position would be so bad, I wanted to make sure you weren't sitting on your leg or hyperextending your knee or something. When you say it feels "bruised" but it's not bruised, do you mean there's pain when you press it or it feels like there's some fluid in the knee?

I'd ice the knee, wrap it, and elevate it for about 10-15 min. every few hours for a couple days. Depending on how the knee feels I would hold off on squats/deadlifts for a workout or two. No need to quit the program though. :)

Langknow, based on what I can see in the video the pain is not in you knee joint, it's slightly below on the side, is this correct?

When you say that it felt swollen and that it feels like you need to stretch it out some that to me sounds like there's some fluid. It doesn't sound serious, maybe a tweak at an insertion point or something, maybe due to slightly over-stretching.

Again I would use the RICE method: rest, ice, compression, elevation to reduce the swelling and get the fluid out. Rest your legs for a couple days. After the fluid leaves and they feel normal or almost back to normal to the touch you could apply some light heat and then resume leg activity. Make sure you adequately warm up though.

Also for the couple days you're resting your leg try to get to the bus earlier so as not to run.

Let us know how the leg's doing.
