Knee Pain: Interview with Mike Robertson - Your Questions?

Postby Mehdi on Tue Oct 14, 2008 4:04 pm

Mike Robertson asked me if I wanted to do an interview with him about "Bulletproof Knees". Since he's the knee guy and knee problems are so common, I thought it would be of value to you. Bulletproof Knees is an printed book + DVD, more info check this: http://stronglifts.com/get-bulletproof-knees

Keep it short & to the point, 2 paragraphs max: what's your problem, when does it happen.

Thanks

This is really interesting. I've bookmarked the link so I can take a look into it. I wonder if it deals with the occasional cracking of the knee, although it's reduced since I've been squatting consistently for close to 4 weeks now. I'm actually not sure how dangerous knee/elbow/back etc... cracking is...gotta do my research on that  before I can fully ask questions and get into a conversation.

While I (knocking wood) I haven't got any knee problem and no questions (BK seems a great product, I'll just order it along with inside/out soon to keep knee and shoulder health), I think the interview is a great thing, I exhort everyone to take advantage of this.

When I squat deep my left knee makes a popping noise. It doesn't hurt and I don't have any loss of strength/stability; but, is this a potential harbinger of problems to come or just noise?

Not sure if you've already done it or not, but I've been having an issue with knee soreness until after I do squats. Stiff and sore when I get up which goes away for the rest of the day after the first or second set. On off days it seems to linger all day. Have considered bulking up 250lbs to see if that helps. But seriously, it is a weird thing that I haven't been able to find a solution for. Other than squatting.

I haven't done this yet no. This topic is still open, I haven't had enough replies to really make it worth. 20 questions should be a minimum to do something with this imo. So get specific with your problem/question so I can put everything in there.

Alright here is my problem

Knee is swelled, went for a jog, feels unstable, can still do fine with warm up, hurt near tibia when squatting to parallel, If i want to keep my knees straight I go with a wider stance when standing, skated fine on it tonight. My school trainer said it was probably just soreness although it doesn't make sense to me seeing as it is swelled.

I'm sure someone has better problems then me

I have a (sort of) problem you can use if better ones don't come in.

I used to front squat-poor flexibility and lack of squat rack-and while doing so I got a lot of pain in my knees and shins. Now I've started back squatting and the pain has pretty much disappeared, but occasionally while walking I get a sharp pain up the inside of my kneecaps (sorry, my anatomical knowledge is rubbish.) This is particularly noticeable while walking up or down stairs. Now, I haven't done front squats for going on 2 months, but the random intermittent pain is still as bad as it was-by no means dehabilitating but irritating and quite embarrassing only being 16.

Doing squat like movements or going up a flight of stairs gives me pain just above my knee caps. It only started happening when I started doing weights.

I'm worried about some knee crunching sounds, wondering what it might mean.

Problem: Every time I do a full/deep squat, my right knee makes a crunching sound once as I descend just past horizontal and again as I ascend (past horizontal). I squat as deep as I can, getting less than 6 inches from the floor. I only hear the sounds when doing full squats, not when I stop at horizontal. There has not yet been any limitations or pain associated with the sounds.

Background: I just started up lifting again recently after a couple years of minimal physical fitness. I have put all my leg lifts on hold until I can read some literature and make sure my technique is right for the lifts I'm doing. Previously, I had mainly only checked ExRx.com as a guide for lift technique. I began hearing the knee sounds 4 weeks after starting lifting again. Leg lifts I did for those weeks were: Full Squats, 45 degree Leg Press, Seated Leg Extension, Seated Hamstring Curls, Smith Machine Calf Raises - all were twice per week and 3x12/10/8. I only felt unsure about my technique on Full Squats.

Thanks Mehdi

That's what gave me the pain as well, so I quit and the pain went away after what seemed like forever...

I had knee surgery for a torn meniscus about 8 months ago. They scoped the knee to remove the bad cartilage but could not repair the meniscus. It took a while but rehab went well and I feel fine now. I heard that after a few years I may need another surgery and I'm not looking forward to that again. I am in the military so running is basically a requirement which I can't avoid (although I may retire in 4 years) and I lift weights. I am 36 years old and don't want to be crippled by the time I'm 45. My question is what can I do to maintain my knee and keep it healthy? And would joint supplements make a difference?

I too, have a crunching sound in both my knees when I squat deep, with or without weight. I am having it as far as I remember, maybe for 20 years or so. But there is no pain or weakness at any point of time. Since I started gym only 7 months back, I can't associate exercises with it.

Is it normal with some of us? So far I don't have any trouble, but as we age, is it going to be troublesome?

Thx in advance.
Stay strong forever.
