I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Knees hurting a bit with Squat

So yesterday I was doing SL 5x5 as I normally have been for about a month or two.

Now, before I say anything else, I believe that I have very good and strict technique with the squat in particular.

Saying that, I was doing squats, and I decided to go a bit deeper than usually (little bit further past parallel than I normally would). When I did this, my knees hurt a little as I was coming up.

Is something wrong? Am I just not used to doing them so deep?

Thanks!

You're probably not keeping your knees out. Shove them out more than you think you need to.

Thank you; I will try that.

I had always heard that you were supposed to not let your knees come out past your toes when squatting. Is this not true?

Push out with your hips more when you squat. Imagine you're sitting on a toilet. Toes pointing out slightly so your knees go out not forward.
Also practice bodyweight squatting to get the technique right without putting pressure on knees.

As stated, probably not pushing your knees out enough. There's a cue in Starting Strength that says don't push down with your heels, but push outwards (like you're trying to spread the floor). Helped keep my knees in line with my toes alot.

No, it is not true. Maybe if you are a very experienced, using a very wide stance and the bar low on the back it is probably close to the truth, but in a normal case with a shoulder wide stance and the bar low, but still on the shoudlers, it would be strange if your knees did not go at least a little in front of the toes. The weight must stay over mid foot in some way, and if you stance is not wider than the shoulders, this mean that the knees most probably must come a little in front of the feet, otherwise you would fall back.
