I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

no offense, but why are you concerned with "healthy?" You weigh less than 50 kg... just eat!

Nuts, natural peanut butter, baked beans, kidney beans are all easy things to add to your diet that can really pack in the calories.

Fair enough kaku930. This sort of depends on what you classify as healthy. In my opinion, healthy means avoiding processed foods, not fatty foods. Fat is your friend.

Whole milk, beef (preferably grass-fed, including bison, elk and any other red meat you can think of), eggs (yokes included), uncured bacon, cheeses (cottage, cheddar, swiss, etc.), natural nut butters (peanut, cashew, almond), nuts, beans, oils (olive, coconut, flax), avocados, sweet potatoes, whole grain pastas, oatmeal, brown rice, beef... beef, beef, and more beef :-)

the term 'healthy' really confuses this thread.

Most food and especially fats are 'healthy' in the appropriate quantities/situations. Vegetable oils (corn, rapeseed etc) for example are a fine source of fat, but have been know to cause problems such as heart lesions if they are a major part of your diet and especially if they are used in high temp (like frying)

Sugar is a high calorie substance which for many underweight people can really help them gain weight. It can actually be really healthy for them! But for many others it needs to be treated like poison.

Carbohydrates are an excellent source of easily absorbed calories which is really satisfying to consume. But for those who are overweight and struggling with excess bodyfat/diabetes they should also treat this like poison.

The only fats we should all universally avoid is the processed type, hydrogenated/trans fats. And soy bean products.

unsaturated oils should be sought out as cold pressed and kept in dark bottles and not used for frying.

For frying it is best to use saturated fat from either plant sources like extra virgin coconut oil which is hard to get hold of. Or animal fat.

But again for anyone actually underweight these are minor issues.

The types of fat that nearly all western people are deficient in is the type found in fish. So id say in the context of your question to the best of my understanding, the number 1 'healthy' source of calories is oily fish.

Great answer by ricepower.

Even that is under some debate, as CLA is being studied for its anti-cancer properties.

Out of curiousity why have you added this to your list of products to universally avoid?

Read this for a bit of info on soy;

http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/2006/jul ... odanddrink

Even if you do not believe it is as harmful as suggested, it is an easily understandable fact that soy contains strong plant oestrogen hormones.

This has a particularly significance for those trying to gain muscle. Oestrogen promotes feminine sex characteristics, reduces muscle mass & prevents growth. Many contraceptive pills are oestrogen based, and most women notice fat gain when on the pill. Oestrogen increases cortisol levels which cause fat increases (especially in the midsection) and muscle wastage. Check cushing's syndrome for more info about this.

Also do not forget that soy products are dirt cheap, heavily industrialised, most often genetically modified and most importantly soy bean oil tastes like shit... actualy, tastes like kerosene to be more precise.
