I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

yeah our sparring is very light as well, most of our time is spent on partner timing drills and hitting the pads. Big change from boxing where most of the technique was on the heavy bag. There's a saturday class that is all sparring which I might start attending.

Love that show.

Good work on the lifts, how is your MT training coming on? Are you sparring yet?

Coming along quite nicely. Feel like I improve every session. A lot of things for my head to process since this is my first serious attempt at a martial art.
We have only done very light sparring so far. Most of the time is spent doing fitness related exercises and punching/kicking combinations on pads. I really enjoy it.

i would love a crack at some kind of mma training, a guy in the gym regularly talks about us looking into it, but in reality i probably wouldn't have the time to spare, my lifting is No1 priority after family and work.

we have a similar mindset, so get yourself more food, more sleep, more focus, those 100k squats have your name on and they're calling.......

Are you sure you are getting to parallel in the vid you posted? It's hard to see on my monitor (your pants blend with the background), but to me it seems like you are not deep enough.

I do need more depth. I should be just below parallel. On this set I was only touching parallel at the very bottom. I managed to improve my depth during my last workout @ last set. I have to make it consistent, and also make a recording.

In short you are right, I'm not deep enough on this recording. It is hard to tell exactly, I'm going to buy some shorts.

Tuesday 20th October - Muay Thai:

Good session. Learned some new things and did lots of punching/kicking at pads. Not feeling sick this time, but very tired. Managed all situps and pushups in the entire session.

I have to get back to the office and work overtime now.

Sleep is still awful. Didn't manage to fall asleep before 2.30am last night.

Thursday 22nd October - Muay Thai:
Some sparring!! YEAH! No knees and elbows allowed. Shins are quite bashed up and I had a bit of a kick to the side of my head. It didn't land to hard though, but was an interesting experience as I never saw it coming. Have to get one of them tooth protector things. Being near the 100kg mark feels like a big advantage against smaller people. Still, the speed they got should never be underestimated and some had very good technique, obviously have background from other martial arts.

One thing I need to practice is responding to an aggressive opponent, it's easy to get overwhelmed and get too passive with the guard up!

Great fun. Quite exhausted and there WILL be some bruising when I wake up tomorrow.

Fun times maroon! Head kicks with no mouthpiece sounds like a baaad idea. Actually, any sparring without a mouthpiece sounds like a bad idea, I had a tooth chipped sparring bodyshots only thanks to a wayward uppercut.

Sounds like you did well, I struggle with aggressive opponents as well not knowing where to get a shot in.

Yep. I didn't think we would start sparring so fast! I'm getting a mouthpiece tomorrow. I really wanted to try it even though I knew the risk, could not help myself!

I have had one of my teeth chipped before a few years ago but that was a real punch to the chin. So yeah; buying mouthpiece and then just counting the days until tuesday :D I have never been knocked out before, I'm curious to how it feels. I have a feeling I'll know in time. Full-on fights/sparring will be optional once I have enough technique. So not in the immediate future.

After work + pub/meal tonight I've been watching Rippetoes' squat videos again.
I'm going to dedicate tomorrow to squat form; mainly depth and hip drive. Going to narrow my stance a little bit too.

Hopefully I'll bag a deadlift PR. 8)

I would really recommend squatting on a box for technique work. Depth, sitting back and hip drive are very easy to fix with a box. You do not need to box squat like the guys at westside. Use the same narrow stance as for the free squat. Use the box only as a tool to correct issues with the free squat.

Good advice. I'll look into this.
I just had a session now, going to post the log up right away.

Saturday 24th October - Workout B:

My workout started today on the way out of my flat. A woman was struggling with moving a washing machine by herself, so I helped her out. Out of the halls, into the lift and then into the other flat. Those things are quite heavy but funnily enough felt considerably lighter since last time I moved one of those.

SQUATS

Today was DEPTH day. I also bought some shorts as those trousers are annoying. The shorts are much better!

20kg 7x5
50kg 1x5

70kg 6x5

I've reduced the weight. I went DEEP. Every single rep. They felt solid. Were definitely below parallel. I reduced the height of the safety catches in power rack to the lowest setting.
The key is to transfer this into the heavier squats. I think I have a weak link in my hip area below parallel so when the weight gets heavier it craps out a bit and I wuss out just at parallel or slightly above.

OHP

20kg 1x5
40kg 1x3

50kg 5 x 5
Solid overall. 50kg is still heavy, I have to psyche myself up and get a bit angry before my last two sets.

Deadlifts

50kg 1x5
100kg 1x3

130kg 1x5 PR

Heavy. Not much else to say about these. I was going to record my squats and deadlifts today but I brought my camera without the SD card

Pull ups

Gym was closing up. Had to rush from deadlifting right into these. NOT recommended.
5 x 4 x 4

Run home from gym with backpack

You people doing any type of cardio after lifting; you are insane and have my respect.

Forgot to mention. Deadlifting with bruised/sore shins from muay thai in shorts = city of pain.

Cheers :) It felt good to pull it. It's getting real heavy on the deadlifts; has me breathing very heavily by the last two reps.
I'm not sure how tight my form is during the last few reps, but I don't get any soreness or anything in my lower back so if anything there won't be any dramatic rounding for sure. I'll get a recording done when I attempt 132.5 on saturday.
