I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

mid back pain

This morning, I woke up to find that my back was in so much pain that I could barely breathe.
Yesterday was a rest day and did not do anything to cause this. I experienced no back pain at all yesterday.
It feels like its one of the segments of the spine right above my diaphragm, and since waking up, the pain has subsided a bit, but I still get these painful jolts that makes me gasp/ yelp. I have to walk with my back bent forward and to the right.
I haven't been deadlifting or squatting with a bent back, and certainly not bent where it is hurting.

I've heard people say soreness can be trained through, and I've trained sore and sick countless times but it didn't seem too wise for me to workout while I can barely walk. I took some anti-inflammatory pills and put something on my back that is supposed to help relieve the pain, but it isn't as effective as I want it to be (ideally, I should be doing my 8th A as I am writing this)

In the event that it does get better by tomorrow morning, should I proceed with the usual 5x5 or deload and take it easy for a few days just to see how it is going?

From the sound of it, it looks like a sprained back. Happens sometimes during sleep. Good idea will be to let it heal - it won't take much time anyway.

Once it is healed (no more pain / discomfort in any position), you can get back to training as usual.

You should get your spine checked out by a medical professional just in case you fucked something up.

I badly strained my back about 2 weeks ago, had very fragile sensitive feeling upper spine. And strong focused pain in within the ribs on my back below left shoulder blade and on the single verterbrae between shoulder blades too.

I really thought id done some serious spinal damage, it was so painful to move around or just breathe. However it turned out to be just strain/tearing of intercostal muscles . The rest of back/spine had just become super sensitive as a side effect. After being careful and easing off on deadlifts etc it is starting to feel a lot better. I got it seen by physiotherapist and she said my spine was fine, which is good.

I deadlifted today which has brought a lot of the pain between ribs back, it hurts again to breathe! Better learn to listen to body and be man enough to give up deads for a good while to allow proper healing.

When people say this they're talking about DOMS, the muscle soreness that comes after working out, and they definitely are not talking about back pain that can take your breath away (if they are, they are idiots).

If I was in your shoes I would rest a lot, and when I start feeling better I'd start doing some dynamic warm ups like lunges, bodyweight squats. Just moving around and paying attention to the pain. If it's feeling better in those movements, then get under an empty barbell and see how things go. Don't push it and don't feel that you have to go straight back to your working weights. A conservative approach is called for here.

well I've done 2 A workouts since the pain went away, and my bench press has totally died.
Can a sprained back lead to pushing strength loss???
if so, what do I do to get the strength back?
