I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

yesterday's diet:

Calories: 4250
Protein: 280g (27%)
Fat: 187g (40%)
Carbs: 344g (33%)

My guts and arse have been pretty belligerent this last week, probably because of all the dairy (no GOMAD, but 2l milk, yogurt, whey, cottage cheese etc). Seems to be settling down, which is great news.

10 November 2009, Tuesday

Squat
20kg, 2x5; 60kg, 1x5; 80kg, 1x3
95kg, 5/5/5/4/5

Godammit. This squat session had me feeling faster and stronger than previous sessions with lighter weight, and then I go and fuck that fourth set up by going too fast and starting the last rep before I'd taken a good breath and set my core. Lost all tightness in the hole and had to dump it. A chump move, but at least I know what happened and how to avoid it next time.

My bung shoulder made a return today. I've been neglecting my rehab exercises lately, so we'll see if a return to those helps things.

OHP
20kg, 2x5; 30kg, 1x5
37.5kg, 5x5
30kg, 1x8

Made amends here by making 5x5 with my PR weight reasonably easily. First 3 sets were good and strong. Last rep on set 4 and 5 was a fight. Mentioned to Jason that I'm anxious about tackling 40kg next time, and he told me to harden up, and that no one got stronger by avoiding difficulty. And he's right, dammit.

Deadlift
60kg, 1x5; 90kg, 1x3
125kg, 1x5

no repeat of last session's shocker. Good form, weight went up smoothly. Held the last rep at the top for a while, until the music in the gym started to get weird.

Chins
no band: 3
blue band: 5/4/4

finished off with my kyphosis komplex, and home for a smoothie.

mjh, so that happens to you too...

Right at the top of the pull I can get the music to change a half to a full tone. Really quite interesting.

Indeed. If I hold a heavy dead I've got about 10 seconds before the music starts to warble, with a sort of buzz coming in and drowning it out. It's interesting for sure, but I ain't going to be experimenting with it. As I said to my workout partner in the manner of Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore... "I love the sound of aneurysm in the morning".

Hmm, wow, interesting - glad to know it's not just me. I've never noticed anyone else comment on that odd auditory phenomenon. For me, the music sounds like it shifts down the scale, and warbles and/or slows down a little. I notice it especially on GMs - not sure why that is.

Yep, that's exactly it. But in my case I get a growing buzz/hummm creep in over it. It freaked me out first time it happened, I thought I was having a stroke. But my guess is that it's just pressure from holding my breath under a load. Might be a good question for Rip's forum.

Solid is blood pressure, dotted is heart rate, roughly what happens during the Valsalva manuever (holding your breathe and squeezing). I'd say the sensations you experience are caused by drop in blood pressure.

looks to be it, thanks Leot. It is about 10 seconds into the hold, so that corresponds with this graph.

Oh well, I'll get the updates from now on ;)

You took the lesson, which is the most important thing.
That and the fact you know this weight will be yours next time.

Don't know why it took me so long to find your log again, Mike. Glad to see you making progress as ever. I'll get caught up on the details over the next few days.

going too fast and starting the last rep before I'd taken a good breath and set my core

Yep, a re-set for each rep has helped me over many a PR. That torso has to be rock solid, huh? Sorry you missed that rep, but it's obviously well within do-able range. Great stuff, Mike.

thanks guys. Indeed, I know I was good for that rep, which is why it was so frustrating. Thanks for checking in KIB.

I nearly did the same thing the other day with 92.5kg - on the same set too, go figure. At least you know you'll have it next time.

yesterday's vittles:

Calories: 3670
Protein: 317g (35%)
Fat: 156g (38%)
Carbs: 241g (26%)

Dinner was 400g baked chicken breast with golden kumara (sweet potato) and steamed veges (red pepper, zucchini, broccoli, purple cabbage). Would have liked to have had my evening snack of cottage cheese + yogurt + mixed berries, adding a couple hundred calories and some protein, but was quite tired and went to bed not long after dinner.

I should note that I am not being very strict with my use of fitday. I really only care about getting a rough idea of how many calories/ grams of macros (protein more than anything) I'm getting and what the ratios are. I seldom count my veges, unless they're starchy like spuds or kumuras, and if I have a beer I don't always count that.

That's the same way I use fitday now. I tracked things pretty religiously for a week or so to get an idea of what I was eating but now I can eyeball everything and have a decent estimate of my calories.
