I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster.
Ill try to spare you all the boring detail. Ive been doing SS for about a month and decided to drop it. I know it wasn't smart on my part because I did lose weight and saw a substantial gain, but realized I did it for the wrong reason (you see theres this girl...)
Anyways, I quit but would like to start over again, but I have no goal, no motivation. I was thinking about picking up wrestling at a local gym to have at least something to work for (I used to wrestle in high school and loved the competition). Should I pick it up and work on both? what is your reason motivation if you have any? I know I cant do it just because I want to, I need something to work for.

Isn't being able to squat 1.5xBW a good goal? Is for me. I had a goal to lose weight - did that. Goal to get fit - did that, running 5k or 10k 4 or 5 times a week. Goal to become strong - 1.5xBW is a good first marker

It's not just that I want strength - although that's a perfectly good and reasonable goal in itself. I became accustomed to setting targets and achieving them; this is the next one. Each target achieved is a boost to confidence and contentment.

Not enough for you?

Fair enough, it seems that you want to do it for yourself. Personally, I don't have that sort of willpower, I mean I did go to the gym every day, but it wasn't for a good reason. Now Ive been out of the gym and setting a personal best isn't going to cut it for me. Ill probably do wrestling so I can stick to it and continue to be motivated.

You said theres a girl right?
Well heres your motivation, get strong enough to squat 1.5xbw and by then you could pick her up and throw her around like she weighs nothing, and trust me this kind of strength is fun to make use of with a girl... (ill leave all the details to your imagination)

Yeah, when she takes too long shopping, just snatch her up and get outta there.

Bad joke, I know.

How about the fact that you only live once. How would you rather live your life? Weak or strong?

It's what gives me motivation.

Just remind yourself of the tens of benefits of strength training, it seems to keep me going.
For example, the squat:

"To enumerate, the squat produces bigger muscles, better nervous control over those bigger muscles, denser bones, tougher tendons and ligaments, the cardiac and pulmonary capacity necessary to function under the circumstances of loaded squatting, and the psychological skills necessary to do them".
Mark Rippetoe - Starting Strength

These are just handful of the physical benefits of strength training, let alone the mental side of things, such as confidence, perseverance and the satisfying feeling of self-achievement. I highly recommend you read Starting Strength, should provide you with tons of motivation as to why you should strength train.

Hahaha, I actually did that to my GF one time at CVS. She couldn't figure out which cards and gift bag to buy so I just picked her up, put one of the bags back and carried her (holding her out in front of me) to the checkout line. She thought it was hilarious.
