I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I agree Sandi. Looks like a poor rapper's attempt at bling. Throw a few more chains on there and I can certainly see Dickens' ghost of Christmas past!

Ok, my wife was laughing so hard and long at these comments, that if I had more sense, I would be concerned that I look even more absurd than I feel.

Ha, you caught me. Yeah, once I started box squatting, I developed this peculiar habit of sometimes sitting down even in my desk chair with a wide stance and keeping my shins vertical or behind. :)

Yikes, I didn't think of that - until you get your cage in, you must be starting your floor presses from the bottom. Brutal...

Glad you liked it! I thought that was one of the better Kroc interviews I'd seen. I'm still trying to fathom 1x40+ for the Kroc rows. Ugh. I think I'll try and work up to 30 at the current weight before going up again. I still can't believe how taxing they are. I don't think any other upper body lift has left me breathing so hard.

Well, it's probably the other way round. At least that's the idea I got a few pages back.

Thurs 10/22 - Cycle 7 Days 3+4 (gone this weekend)

SQ: 5x45, 5x95, 5x135, 5x185, 3x225, 1x275, 1x315, 1x365, 3x3x415 (3RM PR)
RE BP: 5x135, 100@155 (20,15,15,12,13,13,12)
DL: 3x245, 3x335, 1x425, 3x3x445 (3RM PR)
BB hip thrust: 12x95, 12x135, 12x225, 3x8x275
Pullovers: 2x8x110

Very pleased with both the squat and the deadlift. There's definitely more in the tank. I'll have to try a 5x405 set soon. The 1RM calculator Vlad mentioned awhile back has proven to be rather accurate for me so far, and according to this, I think there may be hope for hitting my goals before year end. The BB hip thrusts came from this article. I think I may include them from time to time for lower body assist. I was much happier with the rep effort bench press, and I managed a much better number of sets (and hence reps/set average) than when I did 155 awhile back. Still, I would like to see this done in 5-6 sets, not 7.

That's it workout-wise until Mon or Tuesday.

@Mouse: I'm going to pretend I couldn't even read the small print. ;)

@Kathy: Thanks! The logs have become my favorite thing to read on SL. My wife usually has collapsed into a heap after doing squats (or some strength work) and then a crossfit metcon, so her main interest after she can see straight again is what's for dinner. :)

@guru: Exactly! Some of the metcons she does makes me hurt just watching them. I can't remember the details offhand (and her log is down in the garage, and I am frankly too lazy/tired to go get it), but it involved 5 rounds, and included stuff like 50 back extensions, 50 GM situps and running in each round. That is not at all a sane thing to undertake.

Mon 10/26 - Cycle 8 Day 1 : ME LB + Coan week 5

SQ: 5x45, 5x95, 5x135, 3x185, 3x225, 1x275, 1x315, 1x365, 2x5x405 (5RM PR)
SQ backoff: 10x315
Coan week 5:
  • DL: 3x245, 2x335, 3x3x435
  • DE DL: 3x3x350 (90s rest between sets)
  • BB Shrug 3x5x275
  • SLDL 3x5x350
  • BB Row 3x5x205
  • SS yoke bar arched GM 3x5x160

I wasn't paying attention to what Coan week 5 looked like until it was too late, so this session ran too long, especially after a day of travel. It was worth it for the sets of 5 at 405, though. There's nothing quite like a heavy set of 5 -- that feeling of being unable to get enough air before rep 5, the feeling of racking the bar and feeling the oxygen deficit catch up and make itself violently known 5 seconds after the set ends, the feeling of recovering for minutes after only to go again. Though this Coan stuff is definitely panning out for me, in a way I'm looking forward to it being done so I don't have to leave stuff in the tank for the second segment of the ME LB sessions.

Uh Muddy....you're crazy. And I mean that in the nicest way possible.
How is it even possible to do that many reps  ? You gotta stop doing this silly stuff as it gives me ideas.

Fri 10/30 Cycle 8 Day 3+4 DE LB + some vol UB work

DE Box Squat (below parallel, shins vertical or back): 5x45, 5x95, 5x135, 5x185, 5x225, 12x2x295
Bulg. Split squats: 3x5x120 (using DBs)
Narrow grip bench: 5x3x245
Pullups: 3x10

I've been watching my wife do split squats for the past 2 weeks, and then with all the recent "death of the squat" nonsense, I thought I'd pull them out of the closet again as an assist. I was able to remember all over again just how miserably hard these seem to me. (Is it really possible to work up to half a 1RM back squat in weight on these??) I think these along with the bb hip thrust (from the t-nation article) and GHRs will become staple assists for awhile.

Dynamic squats went really well on the first 9 - very good pop up, shins back, etc. On the last 3 reps, not so much pop, but at least the form stayed good.

@Kathy: PG talked about the dangers of reading logs, in that it makes you want to drop what you're doing and try that. As a corollary to that, I would suggest that not only is the grass always greener in the other log, the crazy factor is always higher in the other log. I see plenty of crazy around here that makes me feel quite normal. :)

@mpetry: I completely confess I had that video in mind of Rippetoe doing 10x315 when I started that backoff set. When I first saw that video on youtube, doing 315 once was a future goal, so I admit it felt great to be able to finally do 10x315 as as backoff.
