I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hello everybody, this is my first post here, so if it's in the wrong place I apologize. (It's sort of a mind-over-matter question.)

I've been doing SL5x5 for about five weeks now, and today was my third day attempting to reach 5x5 on the (overhead) press at 65lb (~29.5kg). After getting 5/4/1/0/1 and 5/5/5/4/1, today I did manage to reach 5 reps on each set, due in no small part to my desire not to fail three times in a row. I'm very pleased, but I am slightly concerned that all I have done is postponed an inevitable deload after failing at 70lb. I suspect that if next Wednesday I begin with the idea that I'm not going to make it, I'll almost certainly be right, so my question is this: After narrowly avoiding a stall, is it a certainty that the next round will not be completed successfully, or is it possible that I'll continue to progress without deloading?

Thanks for listening,
Owehn

Don't think like that !
You WILL start that next session thinking you WILL make it. Period.

It is quite possible you will not get any problems at the next sessions, it is equally possible you might have to go through 2 retries again. You don't know, so don't worry about it.

FWIW I also had my first missed session today. Not coincidentally also on OH Press (40kg/88lbs). But then again, Mehdi already indicated that most people will stall on OH first.
My squat however is now over BW and I did not feel I was at the max (87.5kg at 82 kg BW) so I took that as a positive thing from today's workout.
On OH Press I reached 5/5/5/5/4 (I really could not get the weight up anymore that last rep ...) so I am quite convinced it was just a minor glitch and I should make it next time.
Think likewise ;)

Thanks for the reply! I'm not sure I would have believed there'd be so much of a mental component before I started.

Oh yes, you've gotta be mental.

I just thought I'd drop by again and let you know I incremented to 67.5 pounds and made 5x5 again on my third attempt. Thanks for the encouragement!
