I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Neck pain from front squats

I have problems with neck pain when doing front squats. I am using the standard grip. I have tried to narrow and wider my grip, place the bar on top of my clavicles, behind them and also in front however still feel pain in the back off my neck.

I have problems with my SCM that have a tendency to get strained easy and cause vertigo. My PT told me that my SCM are overused and that I need to work on activation my deeper throat muscles (mainly by chin retractions) I also “suffer” from a forward head posture.

I switched from low bar squats since I had a lot of problems with vertigo when I did them for 1, 5 year ago.

Could usual high bar squats be and option with some sort of padding (more like a towel around the bar not like a squat pad) or should I try some kind of device like the manta ray or sting ray?

Best regards

Keep your head back and stop looking up. You get standard advice without videos.

Bar doesn't sit on your spine, but on your upper-back muscles with back squats.

Is low bar position. From: squat bar position

When I did low bar earlier I noticed that my head really tilted forward and strained my neck. I even tried to place a tennis ball between my chest and chin and squat that way. Did not help. I never look up when front/back squating. Always try to keep the neck in line with the rest of the spine. The same for deadlift. I try to follow the angle that is showed in SS. Even if there are articles that this could round you lower back while deadlifting.

Should I switch to high bar squat? I will post a clip of my front squat. Which angle is best to determine my neck/back postion when squating?

Made some clips:

Hope the angle for the front squats is ok and that is possible to judge my head/neck position.

Also linked clips on low bar and high bar squats (first time in a year that I have done those squats)

Best regards
Daniel

Your neck position looks fine to me, but the bar position is high. That could be a reason for your neck pain. Try to put the bar lower as shown in the picture.

Can't see the front squats at all except the starting position.
