I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I’m thinking of doing GOMAD & have a few questions.

1> Will I still need to take protein supplements on GOMAD? I’m currently I’m on stronglifts 5x5 following the 8 nutrition rules & I also have between 2-3 protein shakes per day which consist of 60.8g protein per shake. Will there be any need if I’m consuming a gallon of milk per day?

2> My latest squat was 60KG, should I aim to increase the weight as much as possible on the GOMAD to rake in the benefit? I feel the squat is still not pushing me to the limit yet and I have a load more weight to add until I start stalling. I weigh approx 80KG and am 6ft in height.

3> I live in the UK (Sheffield), can anyone suggest the best place to buy cheap milk for this. I worked out if I bought milk from Tesco’s it’s gona cost me around £100 a month!!! That’s a lot to be spending just on milk.

Thanks

1)Probably not, but a few shakes here and there won't hurt. Just eat like normal and drink the milk.

2)The more weight you move the more muscle you'll build. That's a bit simplistic, but essentially true. Don't start making impossible leaps just to try and take advantage of the milk though. You may want to wait until the squats are challenging you more before GOMAD'ing.

3)I can't give you any ideas for where to get cheap milk as I don't live in the UK. However, I do want to point out that you'll only be doing it for a month or two, so the expense isn't permanent. If you have "cheap" grocery stores there, go to them. In Canada we have stores that keep their costs down by not running advertisements and not giving bags away, so the products are cheaper. Look around for one there.

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that the idea behind the 8 Rules is to eat as much whole food as possible. Three protein shakes a day is probably too much. And what kind of protein do you have? Most have ~25 g of protein. How do your shakes have over 60 g?

More scoops=more protein :) I think protein shakes are very redundant if you're eating 6 meals and drinking a gomad. gallon of milk is already well over 120g of protein.. add 6 meals, each hopefully containing some form of protein too and you're pretty much set. Maybe a post workout shake out of convenience.

Some good advice, the protein shake I use is optimum nutrition gold standard. 30g per scoop, x2 scoops. I gues the money I save on not buying the protein shake will buy me the milk.

We do have some cheepo stores I could check out the milk prices on. I also recently found a good local meat wholesaller so I can now buy in bulk when I shop for meat.

I did some reading on the side effects on the GOMAD, does anyone have any comments on the acne thing?? would this stop when you stop the GOMAD, I dont want to end up a spotty mess for years after.

My main aim out of all this is to get strong for snowboarding so when Im landing huge jumps my legs dont buckle under the stress. Ive recently started to increase the cardio on my workouts to give me more stamina. I do this at the end of the stronglifts 5x5 plan. My target is 40 mins on the excercise bike x3 times per week to give me a good fitness level. Im currently doing 20 mins.

Does anyone have any comments on the cardio on GOMAD, would this be good or a bad thing? From what Ive read it looks like Id get the benefits of the extra protein in the milk but I wont put on as much fat.

The acne thing as you call it isn't a guaranteed side effect. I didn't get it any worse than I normally do (which is one or two occasionally). If you are prone to acne, it may be a little worse, but I would think it has more to do with increased hormone production than the milk itself.

As for your cardio question, have a look at Mehdi's article on GOMAD mistakes, especially number five. If you manage to limit your fat gains, you will also inhibit your muscle gains. I'd worry about cardio later, or engage in one or two HIIT sessions at the most, but not with the purpose of fat control, but rather for your GPP.

i remember when i was doing GOMAD for a bit and they were selling milk at 2litres for 1 pound which was pretty much half the price i was paying in supermarkets! i would deffo go and check that out if you can find one.

If you're drinking large amounts of milk, powdered milk is usually the cheapest, and you can buy it in bulk.

Start looking at those supermarket catalogues that appear in your mailbox, sometimes there are specials on this or that food.

4lt/day will be too much for you to begin with. It's just hard to consume so much if you're not used to it, and it can do funny things to your guts.

Begin with 1lt/day - just drink it through your workout. In the second week, 2lt/day; in the third, 3lt/day; only in the fourth week 4lt/day.

Don't worry about the shakes. Just have good food, and the milk on top of that. Lots of fresh fruit and vegies, nuts and beans, and some meat, fish and dairy. And for weight gain, lots of starchy stuff (rice, bread, pasta, spuds, Yorkshire pud, etc).

So your saying I need to eat carbs on GOMAD? Ive been avoiding carbs (rice, bread, pasta, spuds, Yorkshire pud, etc) so far.

Ignore KyleAaron's post. Don't use powdered milk, put out the cash for real milk. You'll only be on it for a month or two, so it's not a big deal. I would keep your diet the same but add the milk on top. I gained more muscle and less fat when I ate a diet otherwise low in carbs in a addition to the milk. When I ate more carbs the next month the ratio was reversed.

It's a lot cheaper than buying whey powder for protein shakes. Which you absolutely don't need to do if you are on GOMAD. The milk plus some chicken, fish or beef in your diet will give you all the protein you need.
