I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

One arm chinup progressions?

Postby Westsider on Tue Oct 27, 2009 5:30 pm

I am currently able to do 12 pullups with perfect form. I am trying to work my way up to doing one arm chin-ups. I was wonderring if anyone knew any good progressions or could link me to them since I don't know very much about the one arm chin up other than it looks fucking awesome. Right now I am just doing negatives. I have to have my other hand on the bar because I simply cannot balance myself on the way down.

Thanks for the link. I'll do some weighted two handed movements first like he recommended.

Just a bit of conjecture: I would think that if you can chinup at least 2xBW (probably a little more to counter synergic effects), one arm should be (almost) able to support half that (=your BW). So I would think: best improvement by ie doing a 5x5 chinup scheme with systematic weight increase.

I am looking to switch things up and shock my muscles into growth. My back was very stimulated from doing them. Even if it was just negative reps. Way more than barbell rows and other typical back exercises. I also enjoy bodyweight exercises a lot since I just find them so fun. As I have previously mentioned they look awesome. In OAP's your whole body has to be incredibly tight to be able to hold your weight up, in my experience this is helping me to strain more on my power lifts. I could go on and on but I don't want to bore you.

The guy on beast skills recommended very low sets and reps and lots of rest in between sets. If I remember correctly Mehdi wanted quite brief rest periods in between sets. I don't think this would be that great for someone simply trying to build up enough strength to even do a single rep. How has 5x5 increased your pullup strength rossi? Do think it was optimal?

Bodyweight training is completely new to me so any advice would be greatly appreciated. For now I simply continue to follow the guys advice.
