I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Pain at very low back around glutes

Hi,

I have been doing stronglifts 5x5 and its my second week now. I have noticed some pain in my very low back. It is hard to describe where exactly. It is between the glutes and lower back but more towards the glutes. The image below will show u exactly where. I have drawn a red arrow pointing to exact point:

Image

Now I do not know if its the squats/deadlifts or maybe just my everyday posture (I do have poor posture) when sittin down on a chair (i do sit down for long periods of time).

I am hoping its the posture from sitting on the chair but i have done this for so long so i dont think it would happen now (esp when i just started the routine). I only get the pain when I sit down or sometimes when i flex my glutes in a certain way. I dont experience the pain while I workout however.

Has anyone had this problem before?

It would probably help if you posted a video of your form for squats and deadlifts. If it's something to do with those exercises, a video is the only way someone here will be able to help you.

u know its weird. first it was directly on the tailbone. but now its more to the upper part of my left glute still close to the tail bone though. and it does sometimes extend to the very low back jus above the glute

I have the same thing. The pain is right over the left glute. I have disussed this with a physician and he told me that the sacroiliac joint was inflamed.

Check this out for more information: http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/buttocks/sacroiliac.htm

Let me know what u think.

some of the symptoms are similar. however i have no groin pain. my tail bone no longer hurts and its now just upper glute area to low back but only sometimes. also wheni bend over it mite hurt a little. but its very random. i feel it may be getin better.

my physio said its probably due to bad posture when sittin down and using computer. and i use computer excessively so i think this is the problem.

check your posture though and have you done anything that would have caused an injury?

I've always had prosture probs but they have greatly improved when I started working out. Now my posture is fine.

I got this pain from squatting and I'm still not sure why since I don't go below parallel. I will see a sports physician next week, let's see what he will say.

well that could be why you ave the pain. could be your technique. search "mark rippetoe" on youtube and ull find some excellent guides to squatting.

id personally squat below parallel. how come u dont go below parallel?

I have studied all Rippetoe stuff I could find and also posted videos of my squats here. Nobody told me about major flaws in my squatting technique. I don't go below parallel because my pelvis starts tilting and that's not good.

Let's see what the doc says next week.

If your pelvic bone starts tilting in the bottom of the squat (buttwink) it means you have tight hamstrings. What you should do is stretch (squat stretch especially). What you shouldn't do is just squat above parallel and assume it'll fix itself. It might be part of the cause of your backpain.

I once had some pain around my tailbone. In fact, I thought I had fractured it, even though I couldn't recall any fall where I landed on it. Turns out there was some trigger point in my glutes that refers pain right to the tailbone area. Once I massaged that out, the pain disappeared.

This may not be your issue, but on the off chance that it is, hopefully this helps.

This was a major problem for me three years ago -- although it began when I was a teenager and persisted, getting worse and worse each time it flamed up. Often, one leg would be shorter than the other, pulled up into the hip girdle. The last episode sent me to the hospital at 5AM.

Was told the same thing as many others here with the same problem: sacroiliac joint is inflamed. It only went away when I began stretching, squatting (bodyweight only) and doing glute activation exercises. My hamstrings are extremely tight, and my posture was very poor, most likely a result of growing so tall so fast as a teen and spending too much time in front of a computer.

Basically, I did a lot of this:

Squat down to sit on the edge of a low chair or stool. Keep shins VERTICAL and pelvis tilted back.
Bird dogs and fire hydrants.
Hamstring stretches -- one at a time, laying on my back, with a rope.
Kettlebell swings.

Then I felt good enough to get back under the bar. I would throw in the shoulder dislocations too, just to be sure overall posture isn't compromised. It's been years since I've had any problems.
