I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

What is the ideal protein content per 100g for peanut butter? The one I have been buying is 15.1g of protein/100g.

I am sure this is a low content.

Peanut Butter Protein Content?

Be sure to buy natural stuff, and not the generic normal stuff.   It's full of icing sugar, which is certainly not good for you.

Best PB you can get, in my opinion, is one that grinds the whole peanuts in front of you while you wait. I am lucky as my grocery store has this and it is cheaper than the premade stuff.

Good to know. My grocery has the same, I'll compare the prices, hopefully that is the last item that I have to change - everything else seems pretty good.

Peanut Butter Protein Content?

Yea but it's mostly good fats "monounsaturated fats".
The generic ones are the ones that have trans fat also. Look in the ingridients and if it says partially hydrogenated oil (not sure on it exactly but you will see what I mean) then it has some trans fat. Companies get away with saying it  has no trans fat but in reality it's because it's less than a gram that they just put 0 which in reality it's not.
The one I have now is smart balance pb and it's mixed with flax oil so it has omega 3's also. Serving size is 2 tablespoons and it gives out 17g fat, 5g carbs, 8g protein while the monounsaturated fats is 12g out of the 17g.

Peanut Butter Protein Content?

Postby mdonnelly » Sat Apr 05, 2008 10:51 pm

I really don't count the protein from nuts/nut butter; I just count them as fat sources. I thought that the protein coming from these sources had such a low biological value that it really isn't optimal for building muscle. Then again, I could be completely wrong. Anybody with nutrition/food science degrees out there?

My peanut butter is made with sunflower oil--is this a good thing? It's the only kind my supermarket has. I'm also interested in whether the protein from peanut butter is a good source as far as protein goes since peanut butter definitely has a lot of it.

Make your own. Cost about 1/10th of the price, and tastes better. And has no trans fats that you can in shop bought, (they use hydrogenated oil, i use olive).

I use tesco value nuts. Costs me about 13pence to make 100g peanut butter. As opposed to paying 50p - £1.50 per 100g.

I get this:

No added sugar or salt. 30g protein per 100g. £4.89 for 1kg tub.

Id be interested in making my own too, but all the nuts ive seen in supermarkets workout more expensive. Also how do you crush them?

Plant based proteins do definetely have biological value. Nuts are an excellent protein source. There are many vegan lifters & bodybuilders who have gotten big & strong.
