I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

PowerBlock dumbells any good?

The fellow at Fitness Depot in Ottawa is trying to convince me to buy a PowerBlock dumbell set instead of buying a full set of traditional dumbells. Admittedly, the PowerBlock will cost me less than half what the dumbells would... but they look so hokey.

Anyone have any experience with PowerBlock dumbells? Any good or do my suspicions of crap ring true?

I would say that if your biggest concern is saving space then they'd be a good consideration. But if you have the space/money/time, go with a traditional db set. Changing weight will be just as fast and you get a real db. The handle shape will limit some range of motion for db exercises, and depending on which set you get, they will be considerably more fragile than a solid db.

For an adjustable set, I would go with Iron Master. Constructed like a regular db, and can be dropped if need be. http://www.ironmaster.com/store/Quick-L ... -pr-2.html.

Or keep an eye out on kijiji, craigslist and buy this stuff used

Hey wow - those Iron Masters look pretty good. Found a video on their site, the one at the top...

...and it seems like they're perfect. Any downsides?

Only downside I've found is that they're not available in Canada, at least I couldn't find any retailers, so the shipping costs might be crazy. They're based out of WA state.

Bump for a review. Are they as good as I think they are? Found a retailer in the 'Peg, plan on ordering soon.

I love my selectechs. The Powerblock were just not comfortable for me. Although now that I started
this program I rarely use them but instead use barbells.

Received my ironmaster quick lock db set yesterday. Got the basic set, 120lb add on and the kb handle. I'm glad I recommended them, because they are the SHIT! Way better than any other adjustable db out there. They're not cheap, but they should outlast me.
