I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hello all...

My first post here....have enjoyed the SL Articles for several months and feel like I might fit in here....

Anyway my question is this...

I've always understood that the BEST time to do cardio for fat loss is early in the morning since you're "carb depleted"...

So it seems logical that during your cardio days, you should, dare I say...fast? or eat very little...too maximize fat buring when you do cardio later...

If I do cardio at the gym say after work (5pm)...am I really burning any fat? or do I look at it like I'm burning my current carb stores from lunch or 2pm snack, so my body will burn the fat later? (ironcially, by the time I get home...wifey's got dinner's ready...)

Hope I was clear....

Secondly, I prefer to do a bit of cardio BEFORE I lift....

If I lift first, I'm usually too exhausted to get on the bike/tmill......

Is this a problem?

Thanks for your help.

Think about it this way, would you rather be dead tired when you get on a bike... or dead tired when you put several hundred pounds on your back... it should be abundantly clear now why you should do weight lifting first. If that is not enough reason, you will use a lot of energy doing the cardio first, in which case you'll never reach your full potential on strength. Anyway, doing cardio after lifting maximizes the fat burning potential of the cardio, or so i've heard.

As long as you eat the same amount as you would anyway (i.e. don't compensate for burnt energy by eating more at dinner) it probably won't matter when you do cardio. Also, don't fast, it slows your metabolism.
Goals:
Squat- 315 lbs 5x5
Deadlift- 400 lbs 1x5 (regular grip)
Press- 205 lbs 1x5
Current (known) 1RM:
Squat: 371 lbs
Clean: 220 lbs
