I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Problem with Barbell Rows

Postby DavidNguyen on Tue Nov 03, 2009 3:07 am

I absolutely love Barbell Rows... Because when I'm finished with BR (barbell row) and I flex my back it feels GREAT.

However... I'm stalling already for BR :(
My strength stat:
186lb @ 19-21% BF
235lb 5x5 squat
200lb 1x5 deadlift
85lb OHP
130lb Bench Press
Row are at 120lb (bad form, and today was my 2nd attempt at this weight)

My problem is that I'm stalling way to fast on barbell rows... I'm very confident that my form is on the dot. I do have a problem though...

Should I switch over to inverted rows or keep doing barbell rows?

My back is very weak... What do you recommend to gain base strength in the back - Barbell Row or Inverted Row

Well if you do an inverted row with your feet elevated you are moving more weight than you can doing barbell rows, safer.
The bands won’t make you squat big; check between your legs before you change anything. It takes more than a band to make you squat. -Chuck Vogelpohl

I think you should get your squat fixed first. Either your deadlifts are far from actually demanding any effort of you, or you're doing half- or quarter squats.

My advice is get your deadlift up. Nothing builds back strength like they do. And as mentioned, inverted rows are imo a better exercise for beginners. You'll move a lot more weight than you'd ever be capable of doing with the barbell row.
