I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Protein/Creatine Questions

Postby skullasylum on Fri Nov 06, 2009 9:47 pm

Hi all, new to the board.

I've been using Dymantize Elite Whey and Optimum Nutrition Gold for some time now. My results from it, well, not sure if they are doing much but I'm probably just training wrong.

Anyway, I've recently had an opportunity to get a few supplements from Larry Scotts company called Ultra Pro (whey) and another called Nitroamp (creatine/NO) and I was just wondering if they are any good. The Ultrapro is the best tasting whey I have ever tried. I heard it's made from a candy company called Stephens Gormet in Utah. Problem is, it tastes like cocoa mix. I mean, every brand of whey I've tried tastes pretty much the same, this tastes like candy. Is that all it is? I'd like some opinions before I switch over to buying this stuff. I don't want $50 cocoa mix.

As for the creatine/NO, it doesn't feel like the other pre-workouts I've tried. I don't feel a pump at all and when I'm on creatine, my muscles have a 'fulness' to them. Their creatine doesn't seem to have that either, yet, they tell me it's way better than anyone elses (of course). So is it just basically a Crystallite mix?

Should I just stick with ON or Dymantize? I'm not looking to brand bash, just some opinions.

I'm not familiar with the Larry Scott stuff, so this is strictly about Dymatize.

Their Elite ISO 100 tastes much better than the normal Elite Whey. It's also hydrolyzed, which is better for faster absorption, although it's a little more expensive. I recently got some Dymatize stuff and have really really liked the taste of a 50/50 mix of ISO 100 and Elite Whey. Well it's really tasty in milk of course, water and protein is more of a choke down process. ;)
I buy fish oil, not snake oil.

None of these brands have anything special to offer. You can get perfectly good protein from cheap bulk providers - and perfectly good protein from natural foods. Sending twice, three times or four times as much for the same thing from a big brand name is just wasting your money.

And if you're training wrong, worrying about your brand of creatine is worse than useless. Creatine may be helpful to pros with good technique, but if you aren't in that category, you're either going to simply squander any benefits it might provide, or the extra energy will just help you make short term gains which hide poor technique - something you'll pay for in the long term.

So all the hype about these whey hydrolyzed, isolates, etc are just gimmicks? Where would be a place to buy decent whey in bulk? It does need to be somewhat palatable for me to drink everyday. GNC's line along with some others are godawful to take.

About the creatine? Should I even worry about buying just plain monohydrate or use none at all? Don't get me wrong, I've been lifting for awhile, I just never felt like I've seen much in terms of supplementation but it's been ingrained into since I began so a lot of it is just mental. I don't mind dropping $15 a month for the placebo effect!

There is a previously posted thread at the top of the nutrition page now made into a FAQ. You'll find it has loads of websites for purchasing supplements. I'd start there, most of the sites have reviews by the posters. Best of luck

Well if you're going to buy Creatine, buy Monohydrate. None of that other CEE or Kre-alylin crap, it does exactly the same as monohydrate for twice the price.

U should change the way u benchmark on how good a particular whey protein is. We expect answers like "Recovery was faster, it was easy to digest, no bowel discomfort etc" Taste imo should be the last priority if any.... :D Nevertheless Dymatize is a good brand (some friends of mine found it good and the same guys swear by BSN Syntha 6 despite the fact that it is alsmost twice as expensive), i have no personel experience with whey. I love chicken breats, whole eggs and oats.
