I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

great post today mehdi, just one thing i was wondering, recently when i've been running, on the first couple of miles i've had lower back ache, can run through it, and it tends to die off, but annoying all the same. i thought it could be the psoas since i do sit alot, and before running. i have been sitting at my desk alot more to since i found this website, and the fact uni work is building up. does anyone have any opinions, ill try stretching it before runs starting tomorrow, see what happens. tried the tennis ball thing just a minute ago, well with a snooker ball, little small, but felt it. was a nice pain.

You back takes a little beating from running, due to the shock of your feet travelling up through your hips and spine. As you said though, sitting puts more stress on your lower back than running does itself.
Best thing to do is probably cut back on the distance you run and avoid uphill runs. Also you could try switching to something which has less impact on the body [cycling or swimming]. Keep deadlifting and you'll strengthen the muscles in your lower back which will help.
Take it easy a bit... Have a nice hot bath or something. :o)
Also make sure your posture is good during your run - nice straight line between head, shoulders and hips. :) Try to minimise the impact on the road too by not planting your heels on the floor when you run.
Hope that helps a little.
Russ.

Thank lauren for the post.
One thing: any back pain is not necessarly caused by the psoas. Psoas is one reason. another reason, more common reason i'd say, is lack of glute activation, putting all stress on your back. If you don't use your glutes, lower back/hams do all the work.
If you've got psoas pain, you'll usually feel it in the groin area too (lower abs), and the lower back pain will be on one side.

Remember to use the muscles of the bottom of your feet. Try to run silently as you can. Think of gepards or such, they sure don't make a lot of noise :). Try to get the same activity as when sprinting as hard as you can.
