I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Quark

Mehdi often suggests eating quark cheese as an excellent source of protein. Now, I'm not sure where the other people on the forums come from (Mehdi resides in Europe, I believe), but here in America, quark is not easy to find. Even checking online, however, demonstrated a dearth of places to purchase quark. However, I did manage to locate one place that sells it: http://www.igourmet.com/shoppe/reviewRead.aspx?Prod=322

I thought this might be useful to those of you trying to follow the regiments that Mehdi suggests. Also, if you know of any other places to purchase quark (either in the States, or the net), please do post it.

You might want to see if there's a Polish food store near you - they have the same cheese with a different name - Twarog. I was lucky enough to find it near me.

Tastes like yoghurt, but is denser. Tastes better than cottage cheese. Hard to discuss taste ;)
What's the price in North America? over here it's 0,80€ for 1kg (100g protein). Cottage cheese is expensive, that's why we tend to use quark over here.

Cottage cheese is a good replacement for quark.

If you are luck enough to be able to buy Quark in a store here it is appx $6 per pound
Cottage Cheese is appx $2.50 per pound can buy it almost anywhere.

thats dear. i think, its about 50p in england for a tub, i think its about 250grams, in size. thats quark, cottage cheese is cheap as chips too.

i like quark on toast, or you can use it to make a cheese cake, with yogurt and lite butter. bit of fruit sugar and egg and flour. i think thats it, just need a biscuit base.

I'm vegetarian, so rely on eggs + cheese as my main source of protein. I usally eat cheddar, but it's like £6 for 1kg (about 8 euros), although it does have 25g of protein per 100g.

it's getting to be a bit expensive really, so was thinking about going to quark, but how would you eat a whole kilo of cheese? I think i'd probably be sick, but i havent tasted it so i wouldnt know.

Any quark recipies recomendation? :)

also, oi_joe where do you get quark from?

The easiest way is to mix it with fruits

  • Quark with apple cut in pieces

  • Quark with peer cut in pieces

  • Quark with pieces of ananas

  • Quark with unfrozen berries

  • Quark with banana cut in pieces

  • etc...

500g is easy. I ate 1kg daily in the past at one time. However I always wake up with acne on my chest/forehead when I overdo lactose consumption.

sainsburys, asda, waitroses, i've had it from all these places, its about 50p, high in protein almost not fat. not as nice as cheddar cheese but what is lol. its more like a spread if you see what i mean.

if you have flax seed oil, then mix it into the quark, stir it in well and it becomes water soluble so gets into your body about a million times better than if you swallowed it off the spoon. but don't heat the oil, as it destroys the goodness.

Cheese cake, Quark style

preheat oven gas 4 or 5 place 150 grams of lower fat digestive biscutes in to a bowl and crush, i use a glass, works well. crush into fine crumbs. melt 60 grams low fat butter or burtolli and add to biscuit crumbs and mix. put into tin a press in firmly and bake for 10 mins. in a bowl beat250 grams of Quark, 200 grams of yogurt (i use bio yogurt any flavour i you like) and 50 grams soft brown sugar or even fruit sugar until smooth. add 1 egg and 3 table spoons plain flour and beat again till smooth, add to the biscuit base spread evenly and bake in oven for about 30-35 minutes, remove cool then place in fridge. i add chopped nuts on top too.

not as great as really cheesecake, but a nice treat and not to bad for you.

would it be good to mainly rely on one source of protein, e.g. quark? or should it stem from different sources?
by eating 500g of quark with fruit and fibre (muesli/granola, oats etc) for breakfast and having another 500g in the afternoon I would already have taken in my required 80g of protein.
plus the occasional meat, fish, eggs and so on, this is a cheap alternative to whey or eating lots of (expensive) meat.
