I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Realistically, how many should I aim for?

Hey guys,

At the end of Workout A I do 3xF Dips and at the end of B I do 3xF Pullups/Chinups, but usually I barely end up totalling more than fifteen/twenty reps this way. I feel like with bodyweight exercises I should be aiming for more like 50 for a workout, and then when you start talking weighted it throws a whole other loop in it.

So, realistically, whether I'm changing to 5 sets of 5 or 10 sets of 3 or whatever, how many reps should I aim for for dips, chinups and pullups?

My stats:
Age: 20
Height: 6'1
Weight: 170lb at about 14%BF
Squat: 165
BP:145
BR: 115
DL: 200
OHP: 75

You should aim for 15 on the first set. The other sets/total volume isn't as important as long as it's not a total dropoff. Once you can get 15, start adding weight and do 3x5.

Another method some people incorporate is to aim for a number of reps, then do that regardless of how many sets it takes. You measure progress by trying to decrease the number of sets each workout.

If you do follow this method, I would aim for 25-30 reps at the beginning. And like Coroho said, once you start hitting 15 reps for the first set, it might be a good idea to switch to weighted exercises.
