I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Really tired of inverted row

I'm on my 8th week on SL and I'm just completely tired of IR. I've been able to do ~14 on the first set from the beginning and apart from being able to touch the bar easier (that's mostly due to better flexibility thanks to doing shoulder dislocations) I haven't improved at all. I saw some people were switching over to barbell rows and I want to the do the same. I just want to know when doing BBR should I do 3x5 (3 sets like IR, or 5x5 (like the rest of the barbell exercises)?

For weighted BBR I would use 5x5, starting with the 45 pound bar and working up 5 pounds like every other weighted exercise.

Body weight like IRs are 3xF, weighted exercise like barbell rows are 5x5.

And yeah, I hate IRs too, but they are safer than BBRs because BBRs is too easy to do wrong and get hurt.

Make sure you have adequate hip flexibilty before trying the barbell row. You have to be able to comfortable get your torso horizontal without rounding your back.

In the case of pendlay rows you do let it round during setup, but then you tightly contract it all during lift. (un-rounding it)

Im trying this thing and its working out quite well. Basically im doing my inverted rows before squats. Inverted rows never tire me out but i still hate doing them, so i get them out of the way and it warms up for the squat.
Stats:
Bench: 97kg
Squat: 112kg
Deadlift: 117kg
OHP: 55kg
Dips: 40kg
Pull-ups: 22kg

The deadlift is not dead; size is dead without it.

What is it about IRs that annoy people so much?

Don't do this. Always squat first. Even if you might not feel tired by doing them, you'll still be left with less energy to put into your squats.

Do not mess with the order of the exercises. Read the e-book!

Ok BBR's are definitely hard :(
I just can't get my back straight and it put quite some stress in my lower back. Good thing I started really light :)

americanadian wrote:What is it about IRs that annoy people so much?

I find it really frustrating because it feels like I haven't progressed at all in 2 months.

I took a look at the form, and I just gotta say...yikes lol
It will take me ages to learn that by myself since my gym doesn't allow video so I can't get you guys to help

I know but i hate IR so much. To get them out of the way is the best feeling in the world.

If you hate them so much, why not replace them with barbell rows or power cleans? You have other alternatives, so why not use them?

About the power cleans, personally I love them and do them 2x per week. And I feel that the power clean is by a superior exercise to to the IR or barbell row. But I would not advocate them to beginners without a coach or someone who knows what they're doing. Or at least have a video camera and post your form for critique. All that being said, if you think IR is taxing, the power cleans will wipe you out. I'd suggest barbell rows for most people if they're not liking IRs.

Dunno, I like IRs. I use them alternately with BBRs, but not usually as a replacement for pull-ups (sometimes- depends on what I'm chasing at that particular 8 week period).

As for not progressing: do more this time than last time. I use the smith bar and put my feet up on a jump box, and they're plenty hard in the higher rep ranges. Try 3 sets of 15 this way and see how you feel. Next week (or whenever you do them next 3x16). It's a closed chain BW exercise, so higher reps won't 'hurt' a strength program.

But if you don't like 'em, don't do 'em. Pretty hard logic huh?

Then do three sets of 8 or whatever and follow up the next week with three sets of 9 etc...
