I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Rib pop while Deadlifting

Postby pyramid on Sun Oct 18, 2009 6:06 am

While I was doing a deadlift at 85% 1RM weight, on the way up I heard my rib make a pop noise. I put the weight down and immediately stopped my workout. I didn't feel any pain. Although a couple hours later i did. Nothing hurts to touch. But If i take a deep breath i feel some pain(pressure) in the area, or some twisting movements. Its been 2 days and i think im starting to feel a little better. Anyone with similar injuries have any suggestions of what might have happned? My deadlift form was good. Thanks for any help.

Go to the doctor, that doesn't sound good - probably one of two things:
1) Torn muscle
2) Broken Rib (not sure of the mechanics of this breaking during deadlifts but its not unheard of and i have heard people break ribs before and it does go 'pop')

Broken ribs aren't always that serious but they often don't heal smoothly giving you a bump on your rib cage, also you have to be careful that it hasn't splintered inwards where it could irritate.

Hope it isn't serious, rest up and see what the doc says.

I get a rib out of place fairly often. If you take a deep breath and feel it, that's usually a sign. A chiropractor can put it back in place for you.

Bent over rows are a good way to strengthen the rib joints where they join the vertebra.

I have had a similar experience, twice, whilst squatting. The first time it happened the last workout before a planned break. I was squatting 100kg and on the 5th set there was a pop from the bottom of my ribs on the right hand side. Not especially painful and I carried on with my OHP and deadlift.

The second time was a few weeks later when I was squatting 110kg. Again it happened on the 5th set but this time it was something on the bottom left rib that popped. Again it was not especially painful so I carried on.

On both of these occasions the pain was not really very bad unless I took a deep breath, and even then it was not too painful.

Again, on both occasions the pain went away altogether just after a week. Not exactly sure what happened, if it happens again I might go see a doctor but I am not especially worried about it.
