I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Rigglet's Beginner Training Logs

My son is 6' 1" and weighs 175 lbs.  He is a little bigger than I was at his age.  In 10th grade (my son's grade) I was only 5' 10" and 135 lbs.  When I graduated high school I was 6' 1" and 169 lbs.  Pretty skinny, huh?  Now I weigh almost 100 lbs. more!!  Physically my son takes more after my wife's brothers than he does me.
The strength training will definitely help your son's performance in football.  I wish I had been serious about weights when I played.  What position does your son play and does he play any other sports?

Tony,
I also wish I had been more serious about weights when I was playing, but we knew everything back then...didn't we?!?!
My son is around 6 feet tall and weights around 145lbs.  A little on the skinny side, but he is strong as an ox.  He insists on trying to play defensive back (cornerback or saftey), which I believe he is tall enough for.  Unfortunately for him he got my speed...which is somewhat lacking.  I am trying to convince him to do what my coaches did with me which is to move down to a defensive end/lineman type position.  I tried to play saftey myself, but once I moved to end I found my real love.
He has also been involved in wrestling for a number of years.  I still don't know if he is doing this because he wants to, or because it is the other sport I played in high school.  He doesn't seem to put out much effort in it and I don't think his heart is really in it.  But I will keep encouraging him either way.

Friday  3/21/2008
Squat - 190 lbs. 5/5/5/5/5
Bench - 160 lbs. 5/5/5/5/5
Row - 125 lbs. 5/5/5/5/5
Dips - 7/7/7
Comments:
For some reason the squats felt kind of heavy today.  Not heavy enough that I felt like I would fail, or even fail soon, but heavy nontheless.  I'm excited about hitting the 200lb mark soon.  I think part of my excitement is that I feel like my form is really good.  I'm going to post a video on Monday of my squats and my deadlift for group review.
I did just realize I won't hit 200lbs next week as I will only be working out on Monday.  I leave Wednesday for a 4 day golf outing in Alabama.  But as I told my son...the weights will still be here when I get back.
Bench is getting heavy, but I don't feel like I'm in danger of stalling any time soon.
The hip is feeling a ton better.  I have been stretching and doing mobility exercises about every chance I get.  It has really loosened it up.  It still is a little tender, but I think this is just residual from how tight the flexor was.

Monday  3/24/2008
Squat - 195 lbs. 5/5/5/5/5
Overhead - 105 lbs. 5/5/5/5/5
Deadlift - 245 lbs. 5
Pull-Ups - 3/3/2
Comments:
Everything felt great today.  Squats are feeling heavier each workout, but I don't feel I'm close to a stall.  Hip is feeling good.  I am still stretching and doing mobility excercises all the time.  The guys at work think I have lost my mind.
Unfortunately I don't have a video to post of my squats and deadlift because my son didn't get his rear out of bed this morning.  Our agreement is that I am not going to be his alarm clock.  He has to want to do this for himself.  Well see how he does next workout.
I'll be away until next Monday as I am going out of town for an annual golf outing I go on with a bunch of local Indiana guys.  I'm going to miss my workouts, but I know the golf will be fun.  Hard part will be sticking as closely as possible to my diet.  So I probably won't hit 200lbs until next Wednesday.  I think Monday will be a repeat of this workout so that I get back in the groove after the short break.  Or should I just go for 200lbs when I return?

Think the week off will do you good. Try 200lbs straight away when you get back. If you stall, then you stall.

Well I'm finally back!!! Anyone miss me...I didn't think so. :) I have been off for quite a while due to many reasons, but I'll not give excuses here. It has been my own fault I have been away, whatever the reasons. But now I'm back again with the same drive I had in the beginning. Due to the extended leave of absense I have lowered my weights a ton. Mostly to check form, but also I think it's best to start low and safe than to risk injury by using too much weight too soon. It is so good to be back!!!!

Another week down! It sure is nice to be back in the swing. I am a bit disappointed that my chin ups did not increase by more than one, but I will keep pushing and hopefully that will improve.

Hey man, good that you are back. I just started the Beginner program this week so it was interesting to go through your journal. Hope you stick to it and good luck getting back to your old numbers.

Bench - 110 lbs. 5/5/5/5/5
Rows - 85 lbs. 5/5/5/5/5
Dips - 6/6/5

Comments: Have to work out on Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday this week as I am taking the family on long weekend vacation starting Friday. It sure is a different crowd in the gym on a Sunday morning, compared to 5AM on weekday mornings. A lot more mirror gawking on yesterday morning than I see during the week. :)

Thanks! It is good to be back. I really missed it. All I can say is stick to the routine as laid out and listen to the advice of Mehdi and some of the other long time members and you will be very successful. Good luck to you!
