I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I have a Dovo Shavette disposable blade straight razor and have enjoyed it thus far. Getting use to using the blades and still get an occasional nick but I am big fan. I may try a safety razor at some point . Do you guys feel you get a superior shave with a safety razor over a straight one?
I got a good shave brush at bat & bodyworks. I just need a bowl or mug and I will be all set

I haven't had the courage to try a straight razor yet. Maybe one day.

I'm so sick of in grown hairs and irritation! So, after reading this thread, I decided to order a safety razor last week. Once I get it, I'll let you know how it goes, if you like.

There's a store in the nl where you can get them chaeper. Forgot the name, but google merkur on google.nl, you'll find it and it's same price as when ordering abroad. Ordered musgo real & merkur razors there.

Thanks for your concern, Mehdi. I just searched for "klassiek scheren" (classic shaving in Dutch). It led me to www.scheerwinkel.nl. Is that the shop you meant?

You should have gone for the 'Lemmy' rather than the 'Amish' as an intermediate beard

I did that when I got rid of my beard a previous time. I was delivering a seminar at university about the US civil war, so I decided to get into character a little. Sadly no digital camera at that stage though.

Yes that's the store where I bought everything.

@ MJH - I am a civil war buff...though I have not been into it in a few years, but whenever something is on TV about the Civil War I watch it...big time interested. It is cool that you gave a seminar - what was it about...to summarize if you don't mind?

I did a paper on the civil war during my bachelor's degree in History. My seminar was about the use of black soldiers in the Union army, and issues surrounding that. It was a great paper, and if you haven't seen the Ken Burns you should definately seek it out. Read "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horowitz- it's about his travels to various battlesites and discussions with Civil war re-enacters, and is realy good.
When I visited the states in 2005 I got to go see Gettysburg, and Andersonville prison in Georgia. Both fascinating places, and well worth a visit, especially Gettysburg. I also got to see a lot of civil rights historical spots on a driving tour of the deep south-  such as Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama.

I went to my parent's house fo a couple of days. I checked the bathroom cabinet and there was a Gillette safety razor. Dad said it was from wehen he was in the army in the late 1950s. He said I could have it but he wanted it back if I decided to get rid of it. It was rusty but I took my Dremel tool and was able to clean it up until it shines. The mechanical parts still function great. I will try it tonight.

Great post mjh,

While at my Dad's yesterday for fathers day I did some rummaging through the old medicine cabinet and found two old Gillette safety razors. Not sure how old but one is gold and the other silver. The silver one the handle twists to open the doors on top but on the gold razor the top safety cover comes off completely for blade removal. I'm guessing they are late 60's early 70's vintage. I cleaned them up a bit and tried it out on last nights 5 o'clock shadow and again this morning. (Picked up some fresh blades at Walgreens) This might be one of the smoother shaves I've ever had.

Thanks mjh

I had problems shaving ever since I started. People told me so many different things, and they all didn't work. A couple months back though, I had was busy and needed to go to work. I just lathered up, and shaved with the grain instead of against the grain like I used to. Now I always go with the grain, and I don't have any problems with shaving.

If I do stumble upon an old shaving kit somewhere down the road, I'll definitely pick one up.

I used up my first bar of shaving soap last week, 6 months after I bought it. For $5. Gillette and Schick can go jump.
