I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I also got a Merkur set from classic shaving...2 or 3 years ago. There is ZERO chance of going back. Every guy should do themselves this favor.

I've been using the 5-blade gilette thing or whatever and I've had razor bumps/razor burn all over my neck for the past two years. I'll have to give this a try sometime and see what happens. I'd LOVE to get rid of that shit.

I just ordered a cheap badger hair brush from Amazon, and I have already started using Proraso shaving cream ( actually rebranded as "CO Bigelo, Made in Italy by Proraso"). From what I read, the stuff lasts a lot longer with a brush because it takes less to get a lather.

Next up is switching from my Gillette 5-blade to a Merkur DE razor. This discussion reminded me of an old article from the Onion that was posted before the Gillette Fusion came out: Fsck Everything, We're doing 5 Blades

I used the proraso tube cream at first. A good product but its very tricky to match the amount of water in the brush to the amount of creme you have squeezed out. If you make a lather too dry then your shave will feel and sound like playing a guitar with a gnarled wire brush. On the other hand, a soap cake that can sit in the little mixing bowl will automatically balance the moisture properly. One thing about these safety razors and brushes is that they are unforgiving. Forget about speed shaving in 3 min. If you try this when you first start using the safety razor you will get pwned.

PS I remember that Onion post and how hilarious it was at the time.

beards can be sexy sometimes. You have to have the face for it.

Don't shave with a straight razor, you'll make all the women worry about you cutting your head off or something. My grandpa used to shave with one and then one day his hand started shaking (the guy was about 80, but still), and he cut himself really badly and so now I am totally against straight razors even though they're old school or macho or whatever they're supposed to be. As long as you don't miss spots I don't care.

about 1 1/2 years ago I gave my father a "Blade Master" as present, cause he complained that he constantly has to buy new blades for his razor (simple gilette mach3). you put your razor on the Blade Master thingy when you don't use it. the thing contains a magnet, that creates a magnet field which in turn hardens the steel of the blade and keeps it from becoming blunt.

now you say "WTF? never heard such crap before!", just like I did when I first read about it. then I read a little more, and people were actually saying that it works. so I thought, hell, got no other idea what to get him, so let's buy that thing. and if it doesn't work he has at least a place to put his razor on... well, a few weeks ago he told me that it really seems to work, at least he did not change the blade as often as before and it feels better when shaving..

so this is only supposed to be understood as a recommendation, not as an advertisement! if it works, like they promise (and they even had some scientific research done on it), then it might be a good thing to save even some more money, especially if you are still using the expensive mach3/whatever blades, but also for a closer shave with a straight blade...

apparently the website is only in German, so here's the google translated link: http://translate.google.de/translate?hl ... &ct=result

i found out the other day, that the shape of the blade changes wen you use it, its the fin (the very fine edge), distorts, but it streightens out after about 48 hours. so its good idea to alternate between to blades daily.

its like those cut throat razors. they rarly need sharpening. just stroping lightly. you not meant to use it more than once in 48 hours also.

Picked up 100 Israeli made Personna blades off ebay for $11 including shipping. After pickiing up the Safety razor from my Dad's for free, I'm now shaving for 11 cents a week. Sweet......

I just finished my first cake of soap, which I bought in December for $5. Nice.

Just picked up a Clubman shaving brush last night. I wandered into a Sally Beauty Supply shop while wifey was in Wal-Mart. Makes a world of difference. Get a brush if you haven't yet. :D

Ive always used my dads 1950's gillette safety razor with wilkinson blades (the popular quality blade brand in UK)

The razor is really good as you can adjust blade angle, so if yout are in a rush you put it really flat and its impossible to cut yourself. But if you got time, put it on really steep and shave carefully but more efficently.

Best substance ive found for shaving is grapeseed oil. King of shaves oil is made of grape & eucalyptus and costs $10-£7for 15ml. At the supermarket I can get 500ml grapeseed oil (edible quality) for around $2 !

Its also a very good massage oil.

A question for you guys:
I've got a Merkur, it's stainless steel. After I finish shaving, I take the blade out and dry the thing out. Would it rust if I just shook the water out and left it at that?

Nope. I just rinse and set by the sink. It won't rust.
