I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering because I've got some stainless steel cutlery that's rusted.

I use (actually I don't, as I'm back to wearing a beard these days ) the one in the third link. I chose it over the classic Merkur for the longer handle, which I figured would be more comfotable in my clumsy paws. The solingen is adjustable, but I'm a little skeptical about how much better it would be, as in my experience you can just apply more pressure with the ordinary razor for a "tougher" shave.

Long story short, I'd recommend the long handled classic Merkur.

Also, if this is your first time shaving like this, go for the economical options initially, in case you don't like it. You can always upgrade later.

Awesome, thanks for your advice mjh. I've asked a few other people and they've recommended the same one.

Stainless will rust if it comes into contact with non-stainless metals. Think "Stains-Less," not "Stain-Proof."

I've been to a couple of barbers that used one of those. Best shave ever but you need to know what you're doing obviously. One of them told me that if you go to a barber who doesn't use one of them then he's not a "real" barber he's a "hairstylist". Which I guess he was right about that.

Finally got myself setup for this and had first wet shave w/ safety razor today. It'll certainly take getting used to, and I did nick myself (going against the grain - old habits and all), but the end results is nice enough.

Still shaving this way after a year now and I'm still using the box of blades I bought off ebay. It's costing me about ten cents a week to shave. It took me about a week to get the hang of it, as far as nicks and cuts. With modern multi-blade razors it's easy to get in a hurry, with a safety razor you have to take your time and let the blade do the work.

Also, I've given up shaving cream and soap. I now shave immediately once I step out of the shower with maybe an extra splash of water, then rub in a little post shave lotion, that's it.

I also have the long Merkur (I believe it's called 25C). With cheap blades from HEMA I get wonderful shaves. I can even take a new blade every time and it would still be lots cheaper than Mach3.

I've also bought a straight, a 5/8, but that was alway crap. Too much hassle to get it right.

I've been using a Merkur HD for about 3 years now. I bought a 50 blade sample pack from someone called "letterk" on the Badger & Blade forum at least 2 years ago and I still have a few packs of blades from that pack. My favorite brand of razor blades is now Derby Extra.

At the same time, I got a pure badger brush from a local store and have tried out a number of shaving creams. Proraso, as mentioned above, is a great cream so long as you get it in the tube and lather it yourself. Truefitt & Hill also make great creams, but they dry easily between passes (I've used 1805 and Ultimate Comfort). I've also used shaving creams from Crabtree & Evelyn and their Nomad cream has an amazing hot pepper scent to it.

Lastly, I think a good aftershave is important. I use an alum block from The Art of Shaving after each shave. Just rub it on your wet face after rinsing, leave it there for a few minutes while you clean up your shaving brush and bowl, and then rinse it off. Heals even the nastiest cuts in no time.

I just want to note that the fluffy brushes and creams are no added value for me, I still get better shaves with gilette shaving gel than making lather. YMMV

Question, how well do these razors and pimples/ bumps (the plight of the teenage soul) get along? I try to avoid them even with my fusion, but the fusion has been forgiving to the bumps so far, and a coat of foam or soap can hide a lot...
My face is clean in general, but I've noticed that during season changes, my face likes to break out around the chin, bridge of nose between the eyes and a little on my forehead (granted, I won't be doing much shaving up there)

well I just had my first shave with my Merkur, and I am sold. One of my dormmates even saw me lathering up and said "that's the coolest way of shaving that I've ever seen"

that same dude later told me "dude ur all buff now, I remember two years ago you were tubby"

seems that stronglifts and its community has done a lot of good in my life

Unless your beard area has a lot of pimples, the DE razor should be okay. It comes down to technique. With pimples, it's even more important to make sure the blade is not pointed toward your face, but rather down your face such that it only cuts away at the hair. Also, with acne, avoid shaving against the grain. You don't want to disturb your face any more than necessary.
