I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Site Migrated

Postby Mehdi on Sun Jul 12, 2009 9:50 pm

Blog & Forum are now hosted by linode. Sean took care of the migration, thank him for this. He really did a great job, down time was less than 5mins.

New server has more RAM, things are going a lot faster.

Happy Sunday's!

Board was offline for longer probably (you'd lose data if board stayed open and you kept posting, can't backup/move date like that), but site itself didn't went down for longer than 5mins.

I'm really liking this, it's a lot faster browsing/posting on the forum.

Hmmm, whether it's related I don't know - but I'm having trouble accessing the forum in the daytime (meaning daytime in India) since yesterday. It gives a message - "Upgrading forum to serve you better. Will be back before 3.30 PM GMT - Mehdi"

Tried that - didn't work. The problem in detail -

I have set my home page to "View your posts" & ticked the automatic login checkbox, so I don't have to login every time. This worked like a charm both at work & home. Now since Monday I can't access the forum at work. I can access the main site very well. When I go to the home page, the site asks me to login (didn't happen earlier). Fine, when I login, it takes me to the home page (my posts). However, when I click on the posts, it returns the message I mentioned above. Today it displayed "The requested topic does not exist" message a few times. I tried three browsers - IE, Firefox & Safari. Problem with each one of them.

At home the forum works as usual - no login at startup & no issues at all.

Sounds like your work's DNS server has not yet had the new SL server's details propogated to it. Give it another 24 hours and it will be fine.

When visiting any site your computer grabs the DNS record (stronglifts.com -> 74.207.246.163) but those records are always cached for a period of time as defined by the TTL setting (Time To Live). A day or so before the migration I lowered the TTL to 5 minutes so people wouldn't be stuck with the old server for very long.

But unfortunately for 'guru' their company appears to be one of the few who disobeys the rules and caches beyond the TTL. Luckily there is a workaround.

Probably won't help but you can try clearing your local DNS cache:
  • Windows: ipconfig /flushdns
  • Mac OSX: lookupd -flushcache or dscacheutil -flushcache
  • Linux: No caching by default but you may have 'nscd' or some local DNS service with caching.

If you have administrator access on your computer you can bypass the DNS issues by updating the 'hosts' file http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file. Just add this line:
74.207.246.163 stronglifts.com http://www.stronglifts.com

My fault on the downtime. Originally there was absolutely no downtime, but I made a minor mistake during testing which made the site not accessible for a few minutes. Beyond that I left the forum locked for a few extra minutes to do some testing.

Thanks Sean, for the detailed explanation & tips. Obviously I can't read this post at work, so will note these things down & try them tomorrow. Hopefully things will sort themselves out.

Well, I tried Sean's suggestions on Friday - but to no avail. So I resigned to the fact that I would not be able to access the forum at work anymore.

Com Monday, I tried to open the forum - it asked me to login. Then as I was expecting the message - "Upgrading forum to serve you better. Will be back before 3.30 PM GMT - Mehdi", the forum opened. Voila - no problems since morning - it's about 3 pm here now.

Maybe the servers just needed the weekend to have a chat between themselves & patch up.

Well, I'm happy. Thanks all. :D
