I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Don't misunderstand me, I know what grows, how and why. However, maximum hypertrophy is achieved at a slightly higher rep range than 5x5 and incorporates isolation movements for muscle exhaustion.

My current arms routine consists of weighted pull-ups, weighted chins, weighted dips, weighted close push-ups, and close benching- not to mention all the other compund exercises that work these muscle groups. And the odd curl if I feel sassy. All this is not on the same day to say the least. So I am a big fan of the "power" compound movements- for just that: power.

If I want to get back to size. size, size, I'll be going for muscle exhaution again, which means isolation (I'll stop being able to chin long before I can't curl) and higher reps.

Basically my original comment was referencing that something so BB-centric: the size of your beach muscles, was on a site that is anything but BB-esque.

I think it's okay to want bigger muscles - as long as the focus is on them being strong enough to back up the size.

the last time I measured, I think as was between 14 an 15 inches...

but that doesn't matter since I'm a small guy, they look huge on me.

it's all about the proportions.

thats what i am talking about. messing around i can do a few strict reps with 60 lb dumbbells. not bad for a 5'11" 180 pound dude. its amazing how weak the guys are at the gym, especially the dudes that train arms like there is no tomorrow. if i did arms as much as them i would be a freak, greg valentino style.

Good Point BW! Before SL I couldn't even get 1 pull up & I've lifting for years. Around week 3, I got 5,4,3.

Now when I measured I was 14" unflexed. Didn't know it was supposed to be flexed. Not bad though for 49yrs old.

with heavy rows and pullups you will see your arms get bigger. i like to do a combination of chins and pulls, and after a good set my biceps are pumped and screaming.

Mine are 14" and I'm probably the shortest guy on here :P I haven't noticed any "vertical" growth since starting stronglifts, but density and width, yes. That said, increases to this measurement I can almost fully attribute to tricep growth, which as many legends of the game have quoted, are the backstage bandit making it all possible for the biceps to steal the spotlight. Big triceps, big arms!

I measure mine like twice a year. I just measured unflexed because of this post - 16". But I don't really care. Right now, strength is my thing.

There are 2 more things in my ever-growing list of things that just piss me off -
1) The little newbies with 12" arms flexing in front of the mirror......spare me. Do that at home. So if you're at my gym, don't do that. Same goes with skinny legs and flexing in front of the mirror - if my arms are bigger, wear sweats.
2) Any guy that wears a tank or sleeveless shirt with arms that look like shit. Even if they're small but have muscle, that's OK, but twiggy arms with no muscle or just fat-ass arms with no muscle, put sleeves on. I see that all the time here in the summer and it just irritates the hell out of me.

before i use to care about how big the biceps were but now i like looking at the dudes to see who is really hitting their tris. nothing more impressive than huge slab of meat underneath the bis.

+1 on that. I'll see a guy with big guns and that's where I look, as well. My wife gets sick of me commenting, too.

The triceps are 2/3 of the arm so it's definitely an impressive look when it's well developed.

I feel more confident with bigger arms. Before I began lifting I had 11"- 11.5" flexed arms - at 19 years old (I was a walking skeleton). I've gotten them up over 15" flexed now. I still think they are on the small side, but I feel better and that's what matters. Oh, and I can't remember the last time I did a curl. Maybe in the first couple months of training? All my gains have been from compound lifts. I'm looking forward to more gains in the future.

Nothing like a fat-ass thinking he's a bad-ass because his arms are 'big'. Flab doesn't lift shit, dickhead.

rbtrout- this is also a peeve of mine.
