I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Sixteen-inch arms

What do most people mean when they talk about having fifteen inch arms? Are they talking about flexed or unflexed? I used to think it meant measured around the thickest part of the unflexed bicep, with a straight arm. But lately, I've seen some people with unimpressive arms claim to have fifteen inch arms.

On a related note, when Arnold claimed to have 22-inch arms, was he talking about flexed or unflexed?

Flexed is the way to go; that's when it's at its' largest!

16.5-17" here...haven't measured in about 2months though. Will this week.

16" arms. I am curious but what would be considered 'average' for arm size. I've just barely started 5x5, have slightly worked out in the past, but do work a farm, but I've got 16" flexed arms and don't considered that much of anything. Is there such a thing as average, non-working, generally fit measurements?

When you successfully reach the 'end' of 5x5 beginner (1.5 BW squat, 2x deadlift) what kind of physical stats might be considered norm? Is there such an animal?

According to wiki the average bicep size is 13 inches (I found this a couple other places also). Which is puny IMO but then again so is the average person, as most people don't lift weights.

I think it would be close to impossible to say what stats are normal after the program because people's bodyweight are so different. You might have a guy who's 100 lbs that is squatting 150 lbs and also another guy who's 200 lbs that's squatting 300 lbs. So obviously they can't really be compared.

That would be me at a staggering 13.5" Just means plenty of room for improvement.

Keep in mind that it is unwise to measure your arms while flexed due to the various conditions that could cause them to be swollen or dehydrated, etc. With that being said it is common for me to have measurements between 16.25 and 16.75 inches while flexed, while I have seen consistent progress with an unflexed arm now at 14.5 inches.

I have no idea how big my 'guns' are. As Ed Coan put it, they're just ornaments on the tree. However, the classic 'beach is that way' pose is awesome.

How about the line from the movie "Tommy Boy"?

[Tommy sees a pretty woman. Richard is watching from his window]
Richard Hayden: Scram Tommy. Don't give her the weight room thing.
[Tommy approaches her acting muscular and buff]
Tommy: Do you know where the weight room is? I'll check it out.

Kinda odd seeing a gun size post on this forum. Getting outsized arms tends to mean plenty of isolation exercises for tris and bis and was under the impression that was only for BB "queens" and not for the likes of the uber-basasses trolling around in here.
2009 Goals
BP 405 1RM
OHP 245 1RM
Pull-up BW+135 1x3

do enough weighted dips and your arms will be huge. same with heavy rows and pullups. no one here is bragging about how much they curl. i think you just havent spent enough time outside of BB lifting routines to see arm growth can still happen.
