I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

SL 5x5 with High Cholesterol

I just started SL 5x5 this week and my friend was going to do it with me since we both go to the same gym at the same time every morning. Today he had a doctor appointment and the doctor said that he should focus strictly on cardio because of his high cholesterol.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice for him?

My initial response was "your doctor's a quack", but I guess he likes his doctor.

Squatting increases cardiovascular fitness, as well as doing many other positive things for your body.

Your body can be fine with "dangerously high" cholesterol for a long time. It is nothing to get too worked up about.

Exercise (yes including strength training) and eating well will improve all round health. As long as he doesnt have high blood pressure you should be fine to do any kind of exercise.

And how is strength training supposed to be bad for cholesterol...? Cholesterol doesn't really matter anyway, not a big health risk. Other factors like triglycerides are more important.

Well, Doctor 1, Me 0...

I lost this argument. Today he gave me the ol' "I need to focus on loosing weight and getting healthy first..." line. Oh well, his loss. We'll see which one of us gets better results in a couple of months.

Thanks for the advice, all.

FYI, I am now three weeks into SL5x5 and loving every minute of it. I actually get disappointed when I wake up on Tuesday/Thursday and am not heading to the gym. I also got my wife on board; she is in week one and enjoys it also.

Show him this thread and get him to sign up and post his questions here.

Point out that HIIT or heavy resistance training burns much more calories than steady state cardio. Point out that the former 2 training methods also raise the metabolism which now has to maintain more muscle, repair damaged muscle and create new muscle. Then remind him that even if he does lose fat through cardio and a clean diet, that he won't put any muscle on. Remind him muscle looks better than air.

Then slap him. Twice.

My humble opinion.
