I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Squat/DL irregularity...?

Squat/DL irregularity...?

Postby legendcouture on Sat Nov 07, 2009 4:15 pm

Ok, possibly need some advice from some of you more experienced fellas. Tested my maxes for workout A on Tue & for workout B today & I will start the programme for real on Monday. I'm sure I've read a few times & seen from people's numbers that deadlift should produce the highest numbers. However I've calculated my 5 rep max on squat to be 140kg & on my deadlift to be 130kg. I can think of a few reasons for this but any tips/pointers would be appreciated....or maybe this is nothing to worry about
Reasons I can think of:
1. I've just come off 21 weeks of supersquats routine so am now getting used to squats
2. It is many years since I did deadlifts & to be honest I have always in the past practiced straight leg deadlifts so I think there may be some form & getting used to issues with the deadlift. Today was my 1st time. I always remember being relatively strong on straight leg deads before & was surprised today when my deadlift numbers didn't outweigh my squat
3. Last couple of nights have not been great sleepwise whereas Tuesday I think I was pretty fresh. I'm sure this has some effect....but 10kg+??? Surely not.

Anyway...thoughts from you guys who know this stuff inside out would be much appreciated.

(PS...can already feel what a killer this programme is....very good, I love it so far)

Calculated maxes are often not the best guide. The most common advice to people with this issue is to check their Squat depth and some people even refuse to believe that there is any other reason for this.

My advice

Check back posture as weak back muscles will make deadlifting difficult.
Look at your Squat and Deadlift form.
If you're making good progress, keep going until you stall and you may find that the Deadlift numbers go back to how they should be.
Work on grip strength.

thanks for the tip...grip was definitely an issue today. i believe there is a grip tool you can buy but the name escapes me.
also, i used the word "calculated" incorrectly....they weren't calculated, they were actually the 5RM lifts I did on tues & today. just seemed strange that dead was weaker than squat but the more i think about it i have been squatting for 21 weeks now, regularly increasing weight all the time & as i said when it comes to dead i am pretty much a novice. i will try to get some form advice although i suspect this will be self-help as i live in the back & beyond. thanks again for the advice though.
