I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Stitches in my hand

I recently got stitches in my right hand and the doctor has prohibited me from doing any type of excercise for ten days. Tomorrow is the ninth day and there is a slight chance I might be able to get my stitches out tomorrow and hit the gym up and do something, but my fear is the doctor will stop me from doing any type of lifting for another ten days.

What replacement excercises can I do? I was on the beginner strength training program but I stopped because I couldn't do any type of lifting (this also includes me stopping my daily intake of protein shakes and protein bars). I feel weaker and I don't want to lose everything...

Stitches in my hand

10 days won't kill you mate. It's better to listen to the doctor and take the time off, it's not worth pushing it then opening the wound back up and delaying for a further 20 days. A week off is nice every now and again. :o) Just have to step it up when you get back to the gym.

Ask someone real nice to load the weights for you, and squat. :)

Stitches in my hand

Let it heal, don't want to risk more than these 10 days off.  Do some other things in the meanwhile, prepare yourself mentality to get back in the game, etc

Stitches in my hand

Postby icevermin » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:45 pm

I got my stitches out but a nurse told me to wait another ten days. She asked a random doctor whether I should start again or not and this guy (who has never even seen my wound) was like "no way he needs at least two more weeks of rest"

I'm honestly really upset about this. I can actually feel the fat building (without my workout, my diet really suffered) and I feel a lot weaker and smaller. I can't do any serious lifting for another ten days but I actually this morning lifted a desk at school without problem and I did it without any stress in my hand. I don't think there really is a need for me to wait another ten days but at the same time I'm concerned about the wound reopening. What non-lifting excercises can I do? I know I'm prepared for it mentally, but physically I can feel myself losing it.
Are pushups worth it? I usually do knuckle-pushups and I am getting really upset that I'm losing so much strength.
Also, with the beginner program, is it worth it to do cardio every single day? I hardly run but if it will only benefit then I will start running before I can get back to lifting.

Thanks for the help guys

Cardio 3 times a week is sufficient.

Stitches in my hand

Think 2 years instead of 2 weeks. What's 2 weeks? nothing. Just get well, you'll be motivated to get back in the game. Long term thinking is important in this game, not short term thinking. You want to do this for several years, not several weeks. Let it be, do something else for 2 weeks, do some reading, make plans, set goals, then get into it in 2 weeks.
