I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Strange neck & back-of-head pain

Hi everyone,

I've been working with 5x5 for some months now, and it's been going quite well. (If you want to read my first post go to: http://stronglifts.com/forum/newbie-needs-your-help-t18617.html ).

I havn't really had any problems with any of the exercises, except for OHP (where I had my arms in a faulty angle when pressing the bar overhead. This has been fixed). Other than that, my training has gone well, and my squat form is quite decent, for example. Never had any problems with a rounding lower back etc. I've also gained 7 kilos, which is really positive for me :)

To the point:
The first time I felt the pain was two workouts ago. I started feeling it at the end of my workout (can't remember which exercise). It felt as if somebody had hit me hard in the back of my head. However, this lasted only about 10 minutes, so I didn't really think about it further.

Next time I felt it was 1 week ago, and this time it was really worse. The racks and barbells were occupied so I couldn't begin my workout with squats as I always do. I figured since I had already warmed up, I could do pull-ups instead. When I had done my first pull-up, I instantly felt a jolt of pain striking the back of my head, this time only on the right side of the back of the head. The pain was so intense I couldn't continue with my workout, I couldn't focus and everything I tried to do became fubar. I became really worried, since it couldn't possibly be a nerve that I had damaged with the weight on my back when doing squats, because I felt this pain before I even tried squatting. I really had no clue whatsoever, and I never have headaches otherwise (except for the alcohol related ones  ). The pain didn't disappear until 2 days after, and was quite intense the whole time.

I asked my father, who was an accomplished powerlifter (6th place in the Swedish powerlifting championchips) in his days, and who has really good knowledge of the anatomy of the human body. He had no clue because of the fact that it hadn't come from a exercise with weight on my back. When I later spoke with my friend (who exercises more of the body building type of workouts, but nonetheless) who is a great athlete, he said he had had the same thing about 2 years ago. He went to see a naprapath and had it completely treated. It was the trapezius muscle which had been the cause.

I can't really see why it would be this muscle. My traps are decently trained and I've never had problems like this before. And only the right one? Very strange to me. My back musculature is quite relaxed and I'm never tense (my father gives me massage on the upper back about 2 days a week).

So after a week of inactivity (however I've been stretching my neck and traps as much as possible, and I guess it has helped abit, but I'm not sure), I went to workout today. I didn't feel any particular pain during the workout, but about when I finished, the pain came to me. This time it is situated on the whole back of my head, and is intense this time too.

Please, does anybody know what the hell this is and how it can be treated? I go emo-mode if I cant workout... :(

Big thanks in advance for any light shed upon this issue, and I would like to apologize for any errors you may have found in the above text. (As you may have understood, I'm from Sweden and English isn't my main language  It's not a good excuse but anyways...).
