I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. :lol: But I did. Strong Bar and Fixings for Pull Up - UK

Hey,

I've been looking on the site for a while now and i have to admit it's really useful - loads of quality information. I just started on Stornglifts 5x5 last week (concentrating so much on form right now) and i really enjoy the workout - so much better than just working on the machines at the gym (lack of knowledge at the time).

Anyway what I wanted to ask is if anybody has any advice on where I could get the materials to build a pull up bar in the UK? I want to make a permanently fixed straight bar to go across a 4ft (121.92cm) wide passageway. I have tried B&Q and yet found nothing strong enough. I have also looked on http://www.pipecenter.co.uk which probably do have what I need but I can't figure out what each item is exactly and if it will be suitable (not exactly clued up on piping and fixings).

I know many questions have been asked about creating a pull up bar but all the advice on where to get the materials seem to be for the US and also they all seem to be about making a bar to attach to a ceiling.

Another alternative could be to get an extra long (remember at least 4ft/121.92cm) bar but after alot of searching I haven't found one long enough.

P.S A door frame bar isn't an option.

I use gas pipe mounted between 2 walls. My passage is about 1 meter and it holds just fine.
I made two holes in the bricks and mounted the pipe like that (slide it in deep on one side so it clears the opening of the other side and then slightly slide back).

If I recall correctly it is 1/2" pipe, could also have been 3/4" (there is no marking anymore on the pipe).
I prefer to be called 'H' ;)

Get scaffolding pipe & fittings. Its cheap & very strong, you could even make a squat rack out of it.

H,

I have searched around for gas pipe and yet I've been unable to find anywhere online that could provide me with what I need. I think I'm going to have to scrap the idea of having one across the walkway and see if I can find a good wall mounted one (and somewhere to mount it). It's a shame because I really wanted to make the most of having the option to put a fixed bar across the walkway - would have been perfect.

My mate also suggested to me using scaffolding but i had dismissed that idea because don't you think it would be too thick to get a decent grip?

don't you think it would be too thick to get a decent grip?

I had scaffolding up outside my house for most of this summer. I also have very small hands, but the diameter worked out perfect. I much prefer slightly thicker bars to the thin type. Less strain on fingers and less callouses.
