I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Stronglifts 5x5 problem for my girlfriend : pull and chins

Hi, me and my girlfriend are already on the 2nd week of the stronglifts 5x5 program right now.
We both went through 6 weeks of the beginner version of "truth about 6 packs abs" and she has built a strong enough core to do deadlifts and squats.. I've found ways to make her do inverted rows, which was my problem last week(with knee bent and flat feet, she got 4 reps)

But she has a problem holding on to bars in a high intensity pulling movement, like deadlifts and pull/chins.
The problem is, about 4 months ago a dog bit her hand and she need to stitch her fingertips afterwards, the wounds are pretty deep, and she always uses gloves and straps when doing deadlifts, which now she says doesn't hurt her fingertips as much as without straps.

Now, it's a problem making her do chins/pulls, she couldn't bear the weight of her own body (abt 150lb), the pain is on the fingertips with stitch marks on them, and those fingers only.

I've tried using rack chins, putting her feet on a chair, and let her lift up half her body, but she also says that her stitched fingers hurts when hanging and trying to pull, but she could admit that if they didn't hurt, she should at least be able to do 1 or 2 reps in that position.

I even told her to try and hold herself hanging on a pullup position for 10 secs, and she can barely stand 4, not the strength, she says her fingers are killing her... now I don't know if this is merely a "fear" based pain, because she once deadlifts 70kgs like 8 reps with straps on, and never once complained about her fingers, but last week she tried to deadlift 40kgs without straps, (half-gloves only) Image
and later at night, I saw that she can pull some skin off her stitched fingers, they're tiny, but enough to make me to tell her to use straps for DLs.

Is there a sub for pull/chins? or is there another way I can do it? I currently tell her to do lat pull downs at 3xF to sub chins, with straps too... she can do like 4 reps on 8 plates (idk what the weight is, maybe about 10lb each?). But I've read the FAQ and understands that it cannot be the subs for pullups, I'm at lost here guys.

Oh, and I'm not sure whether her form on the OHP is correct or not, she's struggling at 22,5 kgs currently, and the video on stronglifts.com isn't very clear for me, any link for a good form OHP? and btw, my girlfriend cannot hold a bar with her wrists streched out like at front squat position, she says it hurts, Idk where, but she usually uses the crossed hand position if doing front squats in the past.

Thanks a lot.

Marcel.

Most people (including myself) do pull ups with a thumbless grip. The palm of the hand sort of acts like a hook wrapped over the bar with minimal strain on fingers. She could experiment with grip.

If it doesnt work, then you can actually use straps for pull-ups. Also depending on what kind of apparatus you have for doing pull-ups you could potentially climb up and hold her hands on the bar. Imagine a playground climbing frame for example.

Lastly remember that the pulls/chins are only an assistance exercise. Even though they are an excellent valuable exercise they are not the important part of stronglifts.

Chins/pullups are different and better than pulldowns, but if you can`t do chins pullups then doing pulldowns combined with rows is probably better than only doing rows.

Gloves gives a weaker grip than no gloves and chalk.

Using wraps for everything in the long run is really detrimental to grip strength.

Here`s a press video:

If her wrists hurt then maybe get her to keep wrists aligned to the lower arm through the lift?

Great, I'll substitute her pull up with pull downs + barbell rows

I think we already got the OHP correct.

Thanks a lot

I forgot how to edit posts... doh...

My GF are still using her gym gloves because of the strain on her finger skins (she claims)... and when I talk about using chalks, she says she's allergic to them as an elementary student years ago when they still uses chalk to write on the blackboard... is this even true? magnesium carbonate allergies? doh... not to mention I've moved to another town so I finally got a gym with a squat rack, but this one is far cleaner than my former gym, so I doubt they'll allow chalk here, but I'll ask them after xmas.

Anyone know where I can get liquid chalk in southeast asia? I live in Indonesia, maybe singapore or thailand would deliver here.

I'm currently substituting the pull-ups with Pronated grip lat pull downs, and the chins with the corresponding machine exercise.

I'm still confused on where to put the barbell rows? together with the Lat Pull-down on Workout B day? or to add to after inverted rows on Workout A day? I'm still thinking about doing the latter, because workout B is already very heavy as it is.

Thanks.

Grip chalk is different to blackboard chalk.

Plus by 'allergic' she probably meant she either got dry skin or it made her sneeze. I doubt its possible to have a strong skin reaction to chalk.

Thanks Mehdi, I'll go find some magnesium carbonate and see how it goes with her skin, but I think it would be useful for the deadlifts only, not for the IR or Pullups issues, maybe the barbell rows?

oh, and I'm still confused on where to put the barbell rows, should I make it a substitute for IR or just make it an additional exercise entirely? my opinion is to put it as additional on workout A, workout B is taxing enough without any addition.

what do you think?

Thanks.

If you want to do barbell rows, replace IR by them. Keep it simple.

chalk is needed on deadlifts mostly.

Great, if she can lift 3 sets of 10,8, and 6 reps on her foot flat on the floor IR, how much weight should she start on her barbell rows? will 65 lbs do? (she's about 150 lb).

Let her continue doing IR's until she can hit 15 reps on the first set with straight legs.
