I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Sumo racks and power cages

My gym membership runs out in December and I'm seriously considering building a home gym. Unfortunately I've got a low ceiling in my basement. It measures 80" tall. All the power racks I've seen are 82" and up.

Fortunately, TDS makes sumo racks such as this one. TDS also makes a power cage that is only 76" tall. Both are distributed by New York Barbell.

Are sumo racks and power cages functionally inferior to power racks in any way? I already have a doorway cantilever pull up fixture so I won't miss the absence of a pull-up bar. Will I be able to set the pins low enough to do bench presses? The only drawback I can see so far is that I will unlikely find a cheap second-hand sumo rack since they're much rarer than power racks. I'd have to buy a new one.

Anyone have any experience with sumo racks or power cages? Can anyone recommend any other brands of "short racks" other than TDS?

I've just ordered a sumo rack, and although it hasn't arrived yet I'm positive that it will be fine as I have yet to hear anything negative about it. Only downfall is that it doesn't have a pull-up/chin-up bar. I have heard it is sturdy and functions the same as a strong power rack, so you should have no problem with getting one.
