I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

The girl is driving me crazy

Hate to gripe, but I miss the little back wood gym I use to belong to where the people who went were only concerned with working out and not looking good. The closest gym I go to has this annoying girl in the mornings who drives me nuts. I understand the purpose of mirrors, to make sure your form is correct, and not to keep checking yourself out. I mean come on. Not to mention the fact she wears wrist guards as she is performing her 10lb dumbell routine...what gives. I guess I am griping because she is always occupying the machines and getting little work done in my opinion. I am a woman, so I am curious as to what guys think of the general female population at the gym. Can you tell when a girl is really working hard to build muscle and when a girl is just there thinking she is eye candy?
All you need is patience and persistence.

1)She is using a light weight or is on a treadmill
2)Spandex type material makes up her outfit
3)She isn't sweating not even a bit
4)She looks in the mirror at herself

Those normal point out who aren't there for strength training

Most girls I saw working out a gym, where like most guys I saw working out in a gym: just fooling around, not knowing what they're doing. For girls there's a greater tendency to lose time on the cardio machine while watching tv. I do think that most girls in a gym go to workout, not for the eye candy. There are better places to get eye candy.

I think most girls that go to the gym do legitimately want to look better. I see some girls in my gym running on the treadmill for hours on end every day, which is mind numbingly boring, and takes some degree of motivation. The problem is that they have no damn clue as to how to achieve their goals, and waste endless time on cardio machines or ab exercises. I guess the same thing can be said about guys and bicep curls.

You see as many guys as gals like this, but where the gals are doing cardio, the lads are doing endless reps on machines or of curls. And I'd say as many men go to the gym to see and be seen (or heard, in the case of the grunter). I can't stand strutters, I always wish they'd experience a moment of clarity and realise, "oh, crap. Everyone here thinks I'm a wanker."

ROFL! We seem to have similar people at our gyms. But the one that annoy me the most are the men doing the curls or any other thing to increase their cotton candy look. And don't get me started on the one guy that's all around the gym using as much space and equipment as possible at the same time ... , I had one of those until I decided to go earlier. There is also this man that wants to talk with whoever is near but with a loud voice.

I don't see too many girls thinking that they're eye candy at my gym, but that may also be something to do with the audience this gym has attracted.

What I do mostly see is a chronic fear of "bulking up" which means that they waste a lot of time doing dumbbell curls, tricep kickbacks, side bends, etc with very low weights (2 kg!) and lots of reps. And even then they do it with bad form (upper arm not horizontal on kickback, dumbbells in both hands on side bends, etc).

And then there's the lovely "spot reduction" myth, so all these women (and men) with fat around their stomach spend like 30 mins doing contortions on the floor for their "abs".

So, they're motivated, they're working hard, but just not working smart.

I tend to agree with the others. She's probably committed - hell, she could be sitting at home with a box of Belgian chocolates - it's probably just that she doesn't really have any concrete aim to being there apart from the rather nebulous ' I want to look nice', she's probably been fed all the must-have designer gear in the fitness mags and she's carrying a lot of stigma about physically strong women. A lot of the guys who sit in the gym doing an hour of bench presses and curls are no diferent but they are in a 'men's domain' and they feel more comfortable in their ignorance.

Do the girl a favour. Carry on doing what you're doing and give her a nod every now and again. You're probably the best role model she's got...

Ah, girls at the gym..........how they should be *sigh*

Maybe I will say hi to her and be the nice girl in the gym. Not that I am mean, but I tend to keep to myself and get my workouts done. I like to zone out and concentrate on what I am doing. So I am sure many people think I am full of myself as well. I did look at some of the girls on the page with the link attached. Some of the women were very impressive...others I thought were a little under dressed for my taste. I prefer a tank top and some short that are not so revealing. But then again, I am the one trying to stay under the radar at the gym.

Yeah, be polite and civil. Ignore the retards that come over with unwelcomed advice. I keep to myself too. The Gym Instructors just know me as the guy that squats a lot (as in frequently) and has a sick jump.

@Koryjane1979:

That's good, you might look "full of yourself" to some at the gym, however, over time they will change their mind after they realize you are focused, it happpens, after all, we go to workout, not to chat.
